See What Happens When the King of the Jungle Gets Annoyed with a Group of Hyenas

Hyenas are opportunistic feeders and will attempt to steal another animal’s kill if they think they have a chance. In a video from Maasai Sightings, we see a dominant male lion defend his kill from a pack of hyenas. Because the lion was alone and the hyenas were operating as a group, they may have thought it was a great opportunity to grab a bite to eat. But this lion had other ideas.

The Lion’s Motivation — Defending Against Opportunistic Scavengers

In the video, we see a male lion roaring at a group of hyenas. From the description, we learn that the lion, named Sirikoi, is a dominant male living in the Nairobi National Park.

According to the description, “Sirikoi was a majestic lion with tactical and amazing hunting skills that enabled him to take down big prey like giraffes and buffalo solely alone. Notably, he had a distinctive dark mane, which is a strong indicator of a lion’s health, vigor, and strength as well as testosterone levels. He was a fierce, dominant male lion that seemed to fear nothing, as showcased in this sighting when he took on a whole hyena clan.”

In this video, Sirikoi is facing off against a pack of hyenas to protect his kill. He charges and roars at the hyenas, successfully keeping them at a distance. A lion’s roar is often enough to intimidate potential rivals, and it worked on this group of hyenas.

Is It Common for Hyenas to Steal From Lions?

Hyenas and lions share the African savannah, woodlands, and grasslands. As top predators, both species must compete for resources. They have some similarities as hunters. Lions often hunt in prides, and hyenas hunt together in groups. Both lions and hyenas will scavenge for food and will also steal another animal’s kill.

It’s common for hyenas to attempt to steal a lion’s kill. However, it works both ways. Lions will also steal food from hyenas. The video from Maasai Sightings is unique because it’s a lone lion fighting off a clan of hyenas. Usually, hyenas will win against a lion that is alone. Though hyenas would probably steer clear of a pride, they can often outmaneuver single lions. But this particular lion is known to be a fierce predator, and didn’t back down.

Who Was Sirikoi the Lion?

In the video, we learn the male lion is called Sirikoi. He was a dominant male living in Nairobi National Park who was often observed taking down a large kill by himself. Usually, it takes a pride of lions to bring down giraffes or African buffalo. Sirikoi, however, hunted alone. His dark mane signified his health and high testosterone levels. Due to his hunting prowess, Sirikoi was well-known and frequently photographed taking down large animals. Sadly, he died at age 8 due to health complications.
