Jane Austen’s timeless Pride and Prejudice is coming to the small screen.
In April 2025, Netflix announced that it was adapting the 1813 novel into a six-part series starring Emma Corrin, Jack Lowden and Olivia Colman. The full cast list for the new adaptation was announced the following July.
However, this isn’t the first time the story has been brought to life. The BBC turned the age-old love story into a miniseries in 1995, with Colin Firth as the ever-brooding Mr. Darcy. A decade later, Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen embodied the star-crossed couple in the 2005 film adaptation.
Like past iterations, the upcoming Pride and Prejudice series will remain consistent with Austen’s original story. However, fans can expect to see a whole new cast playing their favorite characters.
“With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy,” writer Dolly Alderton told Tudum.
Netflix has not yet set a release date for the series, which is part of the streamer’s growing slate of Austen adaptations.
Until then, take a look at how the new Pride and Prejudice cast compares to the 2005 film.

Following Knightley’s stellar performance as the headstrong Elizabeth Bennet, Corrin is set to take on the starring role in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation.
The Golden Globe-winning star, best known for their role as Princess Diana in The Crown, told Tudum in July 2025 that playing Elizabeth was a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
“To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia [Colman] and Jack [Lowden], with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor,” Corrin said. “I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”

Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy resulted in what must be history’s most famous hand flex. Though Lowden has big shoes to fill, the actor promised to bring his own flair to the famously reserved romantic lead.
“I quite like the idea of being a ginger Darcy,” the actor jokingly told the BBC in April 2025. “I think that is really breaking down barriers — one of the great last barriers to be broken down.”
Lowden’s most notable roles include Slow Horses and Benediction.

Although Brenda Blethyn played the marriage-determined matriarch Mrs. Bennet in the 2005 film, Colman will take over the role for the miniseries. Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice marks a reunion for the Academy Award-winning actress who played Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown opposite Corrin.
In 2021, they were both nominated for Golden Globes for their performances in the Netflix historical drama. Corrin took home the award.

Though the late Donald Sutherland famously portrayed the unflappable Bennet patriarch two decades ago, Pride & Prejudice director Joe Wright told PEOPLE in April 2025 that he worried his teeth were too “modern” and “white” for the role.
“He kept on telling me this, and that’s why whenever he laughs in the movie, he hides his face,” the director added. “He doesn’t want the audience to see his modern teeth.”
Whether or not Rufus Sewell’s pearly whites will fit the period remains to be seen. However, The Diplomat star has experience with historical British dramas, such as Victoria and Tristan + Isolde.

Rosamund Pike and Freya Mavor
The 2005 film saw Rosamund Pike as Jane Bennet, the eldest daughter who quickly falls for Charles Bingley, a wealthy bachelor who moves near the family’s estate.
The actress told the Golden Globes in November 2021 that Jane was a “tricky character” for a modern audience because her “sweetness and propriety aren’t so fashionable now.”
Freya Mavor, best known for shows like Industry and French films like La Dame Dans L’Auto Avec des Lunettes et un Fusil, will take over the role in the Netflix series.

Jena Malone played the Bennets’ youngest daughter, Lydia Bennet, whose impulsive behavior threatens the family’s reputation.
Decades later, Heartstopper’s Rhea Norwood will portray the strong-willed (and occasionally reckless) girl on-screen.

The movie featured Tom Hollander as clergyman Mr. Collins, a cousin of Mr. Bennet’s who is set to inherit the family’s rural estate since the Bennets have no sons.
Jamie Demetriou, best known for his memorable performances in Fleabag and Stath Lets Flats, has been cast as the pompous and self-important distant relative who intends to marry one of the Bennet girls.

It’s hard to imagine anyone following Judi Dench’s 2005 performance of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr. Darcy’s wealthy and widowed aunt. But Fiona Shaw is set to put her own stamp on the sharp-tongued aristocrat in the Netflix series.
Fans of the Harry Potter franchise will recognize Shaw for her role as Aunt Petunia Dursley. She’s also starred in Killing Eve and Bad Sisters.

Simon Woods played opposite Pike’s Jane in the Pride & Prejudice film adaptation as the affable bachelor Charles Bingley.
Daryl McCormack — seen in films like Good Luck to You, Leo Grande and the upcoming Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery — will embody the role of the charming gentleman for the show.

Carey Mulligan’s first major project was playing Catherine “Kitty” Bennet, the second-youngest daughter of the family who often follows Lydia’s lead in mischief, in the 2005 movie.
Two decades later, actress Hollie Avery will also make her on-screen debut in the role.

Talulah Riley’s performance as the bookish and morally rigid middle sister rounded out the competing personalities of the Bennet girls.
Taking over the role of Mary in the miniseries adaptation is actress Hopey Parish.
Like Avery, Pride and Prejudice is also Parish’s first major role.

Playing the handsome (and potentially manipulative) soldier George Wickham, Rupert Friend brought a deceptive charm to the role in the 2005 film.
Louis Partridge, best known for appearing in the show Disclaimer, has been cast in the role for the upcoming show.
Off-screen, Partridge has been dating pop star Olivia Rodrigo since 2023.

Before she was Beth Dutton in Yellowstone, Kelly Reilly played Charles’s catty, social-climbing sister Caroline Bingley.
Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice will feature Siena Kelly in the role, who can be seen in movies like Domino Day.
