Traditionally held each year on the first Monday in May, fashion’s biggest night — which serves as a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art — always brings out the biggest stars and style icons.

For the first time since 2003, the dress code for the event, “Tailored for You,” focuses exclusively on suiting and menswear and honors Black dandyism, a fashion tradition rooted in cultural resistance and self-expression. The theme is in conjunction with the Costume Institute’s new exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which is inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
