CINCINNATI (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his 42nd homer of the season, a two-run shot that highlighted a four-run eighth inning, as the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 Monday night, extending their winning streak to four games.
Schwarber’s 42nd homer moved him past Shohei Ohtani and into the NL lead. The Dodgers faced the Angels later Monday night. Seattle’s Cal Raleigh leads the AL and MLB with 45 homers. Schwarber has 97 RBIs this season.
Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-3) allowed only three hits through seven innings. But, with two outs in the eighth, he allowed RBI doubles by Weston Wilson and Trea Turner. Schwarber followed with a two-run shot off Tony Santillan to complete the rally.
Abbott bounced back after a rough outing on Wednesday when he allowed four earned runs and a pair of homers in a 6-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Against the Phillies, he retired the first 12 batters he faced before J.T. Realmuto doubled leading off the fifth.
YANKEES 6, TWINS 2
NEW YORK (AP) — Will Warren gave up three hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings to become the first New York starting pitcher to get an out in the seventh inning in a month in a win over Minnesota.
Warren (7-5), who allowed homers to Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach, struck out seven and walked none before Luke Weaver and David Bednar finished off New York’s 23rd win in its last 30 regular-season meetings with Minnesota.
Cody Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice homered against Minnesota starter Zebby Matthews (3-4).
Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the eighth after Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge hit RBI singles in the seventh.
CARDINALS 3, ROCKIES 2
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brendan Donovan hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning, Miles Mikolas didn’t give up a hit through 5 1/3 innings, and St. Louis sent Colorado to their eighth straight loss.
Juan Mejia (1-1) failed to hold a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, while Kyle Leahy (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings after Mikolas went 6 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season.
Mikolas was positioned for a loss after Warming Bernabel and Brenton Doyle drove in runs in the seventh inning to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead. Tyler Freeman broke up Mikolas’ no-hit bid in the sixth inning. He gave up four hits, a walk and struck out three.
Mikolas lost his shot at a win after Jordan Beck bunted his way on and advanced to second on Nolan Gorman’s throwing error. Doyle drove home Mickey Moniak to put the Rockies ahead.
Chase Dollander allowed one run through five innings, the first Rockies starter since Aug. 2 to allow fewer than five runs.
BREWERS 7, PIRATES 1
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brice Turang hit his first career leadoff home run, Jose Quintana allowed three hits over six solid innings and Milwaukee extended their winning streak to 10 games with a win over Pittsburgh.
Quintana (10-4) struck out three and walked one as the Brewers (74-44) improved to 25-4 over the last 29 games, including 13-1 in the last 14. The only real hiccup was Joey Bart’s home run in the third.
Turang sent a sinker from Pirates starter Andrew Heaney over the wall in left center.
Christian Yelich opened the third with a solo home run, RBI singles from Sal Frelick and Brandon Lockridge and an unearned run on Bart’s throwing error capped the third inning.
Grant Anderson held the Pirates without a hit in the seventh and eighth. Shelby Miller pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
ROYALS 7, NATIONALS 4
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvadore Perez and Kyle Isbel hit two-run homers in the sixth inning and Kansas City beat Washington.
Perez homered off rookie Cade Cavalli after Maikel Garcia drew a leadoff walk, tying the game at 4. Adam Frazier singled, chasing Cavalli, and Jackson Rutledge (1-2) entered and retired Randal Grichuk on a double-play grounder. Nick Loftin had a two-out single before scoring on Isbel’s fourth homer. Perez’s homer was his 21st.
James Wood walked leading off the first against Bailey Falter in his home debut for the Royals after being acquired from the Pirates at the trade deadline. Josh Bell hit his 15th homer — a 422-foot, two-out shot to left-center — to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead.
Garcia, Perez and Frazier had consecutive singles to start the second for the Royals’ first run. Loftin’s sacrifice fly tied it 2-all.
Falter left a tie game after four innings and 76 pitches. Wood singled off Daniel Lynch IV (4-2) leading off the fifth and Paul DeJong hit his fourth homer one out later to put the Nationals up 4-2.
Mike Yastrzemski added a run in the eighth with a sac fly. Frazier finished 3 for 4 and Carlos Estévez pitched the ninth for his 30th save.
