Scheana Shay revealed what happened when she ran into ex John Mayer last year.
The Vanderpump Rules alum, who had a romance with the seven-time Grammy winner in 2008, opened up to PEOPLE about running into him in the years since their relationship ended.
According to Shay, 40, she initially ran into Mayer, 47, two years ago at ChainFEST, a gourmet food chain festival in Los Angeles.
“I saw him, and I awkwardly give him a hug, like, ‘Hey, and then made a joke like, ‘Oh, we should get a photo.’ And he was like, ‘No.’ And I was like, ‘I was kind of kidding.’ But yeah, that was awkward,” she tells PEOPLE.

“I didn’t even go in for the hug,” she recalls. “He went out for a handshake. I’m like, ‘Well, this is awkward, too.”
A rep for Mayer didn’t immediately respond to PEOPLE for comment.
In My Good Side, Shay recalls meeting Mayer in 2008 while working at his birthday event, and at the time, he was dating Jennifer Aniston.

In the book, she reveals that the romance also overlapped with the one she had with Eddie Cibrian, with whom she also wasn’t exclusive.
However, their romance ended after one of her girlfriends allegedly went to the tabloids about her and Mayer. She writes, “Once it was public, he didn’t want to speak to me or see me anymore.”

“Out of respect” for Mayer, Shay tells PEOPLE that she kept some details of their romance private.
“I know him and Andy Cohen are very good friends, and I’m not trying to burn any bridges with this book,” she says. “I’m just trying to tell my truth and tell enough of it to give context.”
At the time, PEOPLE reached out to reps for Mayer for comment, but they did not immediately respond.
