Sarah Snook made her long-awaited debut on the Met Gala red carpet in New York City on Monday night, and you might say she looks like she walked straight out of a 19th century portrait.
The former Succession star wore a unique black tuxedo with a cape coming out of the blazer, which was adorned with half a dozen brooches.
The Australian actress is currently starring in The Picture of Dorian Gray on Broadway, where she is playing all 26 roles in the adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s famous play. And while Shiv Roy was all quiet luxury, Dorian Gray is anything but.
“We were adapting the script and designing the show at the same time, which was an amazing thing,” Marg Horwell, the scenic and costume designer for the play, told Town & Country in April. “The biggest question was, ‘What does the portrait look like?’ We had several versions of the show where we were going to try and make a horrific picture, but it’s hard to make something universally horrific and it felt like what we were doing with the entire show was making a tapestry of a portrait. Because there’s one performer, she was a representation of everybody in the piece.”
Horwell was particularly interested to dress Snook in menswear-style looks, but she sought inspiration from everywhere—including looks seen at the Met Gala in years past. “I also looked at photos from the 1980s, and Annie Lennox with that androgynous fashion and wide shoulders,” she told Variety. “I got sparked by Bad Bunny, who wore that backless suit to the Met Gala. I got obsessed with Lucky Blue Smith, the model who had that impossible, tussled blonde hair that sometimes he’d wear in a quiff, and it just felt angelic and young and yet felt 100 years old. So, that look is a super eclectic look that is deliberately layered on top of each other, so that she feels completely held, and then can unravel by the end.”
For reference, here is that Bad Bunny look from the 2023 Met Gala, celebrating “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty.”
The theme for the 2025 Met Gala is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This year’s co-chairs are Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, two-time Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, musician and Louis Vuitton men’s creative director Pharrell Williams, and Grammy-nominated rapper A$AP Rocky, along with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. NBA legend LeBron James is an honorary chair.
