Sarah McLachlan is opening up about her difficult relationship with her eldest daughter India Ann in her new music.
The “Angel” singer, 57, shared in an interview with Variety that her new song “Gravity,” from her upcoming Better Broken album, was inspired by a past rift with her 23-year-old daughter. She shares daughters India Ann and Taja Summer, 18, with ex-husband Ashwin Sood.
“I love playing this song because of the challenges that I went through with my firstborn daughter,” McLachlan said. “It feels really sweet to be able to sing this song and know that we’re in such a better place, having come through this really challenging time together.”
The singer-songwriter previously shared in a statement alongside the single obtained by Variety and iHeart Radio stations that the song tackles the mother-daughter duo’s “combative and fraught relationship” and touches on their work to make amends through counseling.

“What I came to realize is that so much of what I perceived as obstinance or rage was actually masking a ton of anxiety on her part,” McLachlan said in the statement.

“We went to counseling together, and I learned that she felt so alone and unvalidated by me—which was devastating to hear, but it led us both to change the way we communicate with each other,” she continued. “I wrote ‘Gravity’ as a way of saying to her, ‘I’ve always loved you and want the best for you, and you’re perfect the way you are.’ ”
The “I Will Remember You” singer told Variety that she believed “Gravity” was one of the standouts on the record — partially due to its message and the response she’s gotten from people on it.
“I think it’s one of the strongest tracks, if not the strongest track, on the record,” she said. “It’s highly emotional, and because I’ve had the opportunity to play it to other people for a year or two, the connection that people have had to it has been pretty immediate and intense.”
“This [song] is sort of back to a little bit of the more traditional balladeering that I’m kind of known for. This felt like the strongest track, and I picked the three (pre-release singles) that seemed like the strongest and people had the most attachment to,” she added.

Better Broken is McLachlan’s first album in nine years, since 2014’s Shine On. She previously described recording the new album “such a joyful process.” The album’s release comes a year after she embarked on the 30th anniversary tour for her 1993 album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.
“I haven’t been on tour since 2016. So I thought it was a really important record for me, and I just thought it would be really fun to get up there and play the whole thing,” she told PEOPLE in 2023 ahead of her North American trek.
Better Broken, which will be released on Sept. 19, is available for preorder.
