Sandra Bullock Says She Wasn’t Supposed to ‘Like’ Jennifer Aniston originally appeared on Parade.
Sandra Bullock reflected on the obstacles she and Jennifer Aniston overcame to become friends.
Despite both skyrocketing to fame in the 1990s, Bullock, 61, and Aniston, 56, did not forge a friendship until 15 years ago.
“We were from that time in the business where no one wanted the ladies to be friends — it was about pitting everyone against each other,” Bullock said in Aniston’s September 2025 Vanity Fair cover story. “We were told we weren’t supposed to do that — meaning like and respect and honor each other.”
Bullock and Aniston ultimately crossed paths at a mutual friend’s wedding 15 years ago, bonding as they spent the night drinking together.

“We were just like, ‘Oh, my God, we need to meet and cut loose,’” Bullock recalled. “And we did.”
Aniston subsequently invited Bullock into her inner circle, including her in dinner parties, vacations and holiday gatherings. The two connected over their unique experiences in Hollywood, such as their fear of flying and respective encounters with stalkers.
“It makes me think, ‘Do I really have to go outside and navigate the world?’” Bullock said. “There’s the cases where they got into the house, the cases where they’re outside the house, the cases where you’re on a film set and they figured out where you are and the cases that no one hears about. It’s ongoing. It’s not a one-off. And it does create a mindset where your home also unfortunately becomes your fortress.”
Despite their shared anxieties and the attention constantly surrounding them, Bullock and Aniston encourage each other to not hide away at home.
Bullock noted, “There’s a motivation of going, ‘OK, we need to go somewhere. Where are we going?’”
As for Aniston’s willingness to remain in the public eye after decades of speculation about her personal life, Bullock applauded her friend.
“I think her superpower is that she could very easily be hard,” she said, “but she’s incredibly open.”
