Kiefer Sherwood’s Canucks Return Delayed: Sharks’ New Star to Sit Out Tonight’s Clash

The wait continues for Sharks fans. Newly acquired forward Kiefer Sherwood will not play in tonight’s pivotal game against his old team, the Canucks, as he remains on injured reserve. Sherwood’s debut is delayed, but his impact on San Jose’s playoff push is already being felt in the locker room.

The much-anticipated reunion between San Jose Sharks forward Kiefer Sherwood and his former team, the Vancouver Canucks, will have to wait. Sherwood, who was traded to San Jose just last month, will not be in the lineup for tonight’s game at Rogers Arena, according to a report from San Jose Hockey Now.

The 30-year-old forward, acquired from the Canucks on Jan. 19 in exchange for defenseman Cole Clayton and two second-round draft picks, remains on injured reserve. The news means Sharks supporters will have to wait a bit longer to see the impact player who led Vancouver in goals this season before the trade.

Both teams face off on Jan. 27 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. The last time these two division rivals met was on Dec. 27, when the Sharks won 6-3. In that game, Sherwood, then still with Vancouver, had five shots on goal in 16:22 of ice time, showcasing the offensive threat he poses.

Who is Kiefer Sherwood?

Sherwood is a 6-foot, 194-pound forward from Columbus, Ohio, who made a name for himself as an undrafted free agent. He signed with the Anaheim Ducks in 2018 after a successful collegiate career at Miami University. Over his NHL career with the Ducks, Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators, and Canucks, he has appeared in 309 games, scoring 121 points (60 goals, 61 assists).

This season with Vancouver, Sherwood was having a career year, leading the team in goals with 17 and ranking second in the NHL in hits with 210. His physical, tenacious style of play earned him the respect of opponents and teammates alike. He even recorded two hat tricks in the 2025-26 season, showcasing his offensive capabilities.

How Sherwood Fuels the Sharks’ Playoff Push

Sherwood arrives in San Jose at a crucial time. The Sharks, with a 26-21-3 record and 55 points, are on the cusp of a wild-card playoff spot, a significant improvement over the Canucks’ 17-30-5 record and 39 points. His addition was a calculated move to add a proven goal-scorer and a “dog” in the locker room, as described by Sharks’ young star Macklin Celebrini.

“He’s hard to play against, and that’s something that I respected, playing against them,” Celebrini said. “And I’m happy to have that on our team.”

Sherwood himself expressed excitement about joining a team in the playoff hunt. “I’m just excited. I looked at the standings right away. And, you know, obviously you just want to be able to compete and be in the hunt,” he said. “So that’s something that, you know, I’m really looking forward to helping this team and pushing forward in the second half.”

When healthy, Sherwood is expected to bring energy, physicality, and a scoring touch to a Sharks lineup that is building a new identity. He aims to make his new team “hard to play against” and is eager to contribute to the culture being built in San Jose.

The Sharks’ front office made a significant investment to acquire Sherwood, giving up a young defenseman and two future draft picks. The decision signals their belief that he can be a key piece in their quest to return to the playoffs. His presence is meant to provide a veteran boost to a young core that includes Celebrini and other promising talents.

While Sherwood’s debut is delayed, his impact is already being felt in the team’s mindset. He brings a winning attitude and a proven track record of success, which are invaluable as the Sharks navigate the final stretch of the regular season.

For now, Sharks fans will have to watch from the stands or on TV as their new star watches from the press box. But when Sherwood does finally don the teal and black, he will be ready to make an immediate impact in the race for the postseason.
