Russell Crowe and Henry Cavill Reunite For ‘Highlander’ Reboot originally appeared on Parade.
It’s been roughly four years that Henry Cavill’s long-awaited Highlander reboot has been in production, with the ensuing film languishing on in development hell in the interim since.
In an exciting sign that the remake is officially moving forward, Russell Crowe has recently joined the film, with the veteran actor set to portray an undisclosed “key role,” according to Collider.
The project will mark the exciting reunion between Cavill and Crowe nearly a decade after their previous collaboration on 2013’s Man of Steel. In said film, Cavill and Crowe famously portrayed the Kryptonian father-son duo of Kal-El and Jor-El, with inheriting a role previously portrayed by Hollywood legend, Marlon Brando.
While it’s not currently known whether the 61-year-old Crowe will take over the role of Juan Sanchez-Villalobos Ramirez from the late great Sean Connery, his former Man of Steel co-star Cavill has been cast as Ramirez’s 16th century Scottish pupil, Connor MacLeod (a role previously portrayed by Christopher Lambert).
Additional details about the movie’s plot or production has yet to be made clear, but it has since been confirmed that Chad Stahelski — the creator and primary filmmaker behind the John Wick franchise — has signed as the upcoming film’s director. Filming for the reboot is expected to commence later this fall with an anticipated release date of either 2027 or 2028.
Alternating back and forth between 1980s New York and 16th century Scotland, Highlander follows a seemingly invincible Scottish warrior (Lambert) who is trained by his enigmatic mentor (Connery) in the ways of swordplay and immortal life.
Co-starring Roxanne Hart and Clancy Brown, the film was initially released to mixed reviews and a poor box office performance, but has since become a beloved cult classic.
In the decades since the original Highlander‘s release, multiple attempts to produce a reboot of the film have been attempted, including various versions that would have starred Ryan Reynolds, Kit Harington and Robert Pattinson, among other notable actors.
