C’est tragique, n’est-ce pas?
Rupert Everett is opening up about his own personal “tragedy” — being unceremoniously dropped from Emily in Paris.
Viewers of the Netflix show will recall that the English actor appeared in the season 4 finale, “All Roads Lead to Rome,” playing interior designer Giorgio Barbieri, who reunites with an old friend, Emily’s boss Sylvie Grateau (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), when she’s looking for an office in the Eternal City.
Apparently that’s the first and last we’ll see of Giorgio. Everett told Vanity Fair that he won’t be in the next season of Emily in Paris because he was “fired” without explanation.
“I did a scene in the latest season, and they told me, ‘Next year we’ll speak,'” he said. “I waited for them to call me — but ultimately, it never came, and they just fired me. Show business is always very difficult, from the beginning to the end. When they write the screenplay, they think they want you — but then things change, and they lose your character. I don’t know why.”
He added, “For me, it was a tragedy. I was in bed for two weeks because I couldn’t get over it.”
Vanity Fair noted in its report that “a source close to the production” said Everett “was hired as a guest star, and his character’s story came to a conclusion.”
Representatives for Netflix didn’t immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment Wednesday.
Everett’s cameo may have been short-lived, but it made an impression on at least one of his costars. Leroy-Beaulieu told PEOPLE that her most memorable scene of the latter half of season 4 was when she was working with the My Best Friend’s Wedding star.
“I had so much fun with Rupert Everett in Rome,” the French actress said. Though they hadn’t met previously, she said working with him “was so much fun because his personality is crazy. That was a really great moment.”

Everett isn’t the only one who won’t be back for season 5. Camille Razat, who played Emily’s friend and occasional romantic rival Camille in the first four seasons, announced in April that she was saying au revoir to the show.
“After an incredible journey, I’ve made the decision to step away from Emily in Paris,” Razat wrote on Instagram. “It has been a truly wonderful experience, one filled with growth, creativity, and unforgettable memories.”

Razat then thanked series creator Darren Star, Netflix, and Paramount for “giving me the opportunity to bring Camille to life and leaving the door open for her return, as she will always be a part of Emily in Paris world.”
Cast members Lily Collins (Emily), Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park (Mindy Chen), Lucas Bravo (Gabriel), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Bruno Gouery (Luc), William Abadie (Antoine Lambert), Lucien Laviscount (Alfie), Eugenio Franceschini (Marcello), and Thalia Besson (Genevieve) are all returning for the new season, which is set to premiere later this year.
