Selling a house is never easy, presenting all kinds of logistical challenges, financial headaches, and unmitigated stress in finding the right buyer for your home. Such is especially the case when you’re selling off a house valued at millions of dollars, as happens to be the case with most celebrities listing their property on the market.

In a rough bit of news for celebrated comedian Rosie O’Donnell, the former co-host of The Viewsold her Manhattan residence for just over half of its estimated value. The penthouse property, located in Midtown East, was sold for $4.75 million: a significant drop from the $8 million O’Donnell paid for the residence in 2017.

The sale comes as a direct result of the 63-year-old O’Donnell’s decision to move from the U.S. to Ireland in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidential election in 2024.

O’Donnell, a longtime critic of Trump’s policies, revealed her move across the Atlantic on TikTok, stating that the decision came mostly out of a desire to protect her non-binary child, Clay.

“I was never someone who thought I would move to another country,” O’Donnell said. “That’s what I decided would be the best for myself and my 12-year-old child. And here we are.”

Of the move, O’Donnell went on to say, “You know, I’m happy. Clay is happy. I miss my other kids. I miss my friends. I miss many things about life there at home and I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country and when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.”

More recently, O’Donnell has said that she’s currently applying for citizenship in Ireland, reaffirming her family’s connection to the country. (Her father immigrated from County Donegal in his childhood, while her mother was Irish American.)
