New Balance is getting the Motomami treatment.
Today, July 9, the global sportswear brand officially welcomes Rosalía into the family as its latest ambassador. With a group of famous faces that includes Olympic athletes Coco Gauff and Cameron Brink, Rosalía’s entrance into the bloodline marks a new era of experimental fashion, bold creativity, and pure fun for New Balance.
To kick off her ambassadorship, the “Bizcochito” singer is starring in a cinematic five-part campaign for the brand. Shot like a series of moody film stills, the photo story and accompanying clip sees the Spanish rapper take on her journey from Boston (New Balance’s home base) to New York City—all while wearing her sleek New Balance 204L sneakers. The style, in elegant brown, cream, and beige suede, features a trusty rubber sole ready for the hard terrain ahead.
Staying true to her powerful, coquettish style, Rosalía wears the retro-inspired shoes with a long beige trench coat, transparent black tights layered under scrunched-up gray socks, and sleek black alien-esque sunglasses. She also carries a mysterious package, which is revealed to be a custom painting of a New Balance x Rosalía logo, marking the birth of the artistic union.
Ahead of the campaign launch, Rosalía sat down for a Q&A with Harper’s Bazaar to talk all things sports, style, and what is inspiring her this summer.
We at HB are obsessed with your style, why was this NB partnership right for you?
I’ve always been passionate about design and sports, and since childhood I’ve always been active—a whirlwind basically. As an adult, it’s the same, so I’m super excited. In fact, if I had a superpower growing up, it was running, running really fast. I loved racing the boys in my class and beating them! Today, I still try to find any excuse to run, to connect, and to just have fun.
You always nail that coquette, bold, schoolgirl style—how does athleisure fit into your wardrobe?
If I already have sporty pieces in my closet, why not use them? Lately I’m obsessed with cleats, especially the “442” in full gold or black. I played on my town’s girls’ football (soccer) team as a teen, and my love for football still lives in me in many ways. If I can express who I am through what I wear, I’ll do it!
It’s been clear for years that everyday looks can be made interesting by mixing athletic pieces with non-athletic ones, and with New Balance that mix is especially spot-on—classic silhouettes, patterns, and shapes that go with everything. Personally, I gravitate toward men’s shorts and classic sneakers.
Are there any pieces you can’t stop wearing lately? How do you like to style them?
For working out, it’s got to be leggings and tops for pure functionality. But in my street style, I’m obsessed with football-boot heels, and the Miu Miu collab, I absolutely love! I’m a big fan of always using something in a decontextualized way, hahah.
You’re always innovating your style, what’s your morning dressing routine like?
I don’t have any routine. Lately I try to pack light, then look into my suitcase. check the weather, see how much time I’ve got to create a look, where I’m going, what I’ll be doing, and whether I feel like going full-on or keeping it chill.
What vibe are you feeling this summer?
Things in my head, neon green, Studio Ghibli films, cherries on ice, bags full of notes I’ll never reread, climbing mountains, Juan Mayorga’s plays, cooking amatriciana for my people, praying, how Pau Casals plays, waking up early, walking, running, biking, riding a motorbike, going somewhere I’ve never been, the absence of jewelry, and that freshly oiled, sun-kissed skin glow.
When you’re on stage, what kind of looks make you feel most like yourself?
Anything that lets me move freely while giving me the strength and courage I need to put myself out there on stage.
New Balance supports athletes, and as a performer, you are one too. What role does exercise and self-care play in your daily life?
Ufff… definitely an important place. I am both instrument and instrumentalist, so just imagine. Since my body is my main tool, over the years I’ve learned to listen more carefully to its needs.
