Close friends of Rob and Michele Reiner are vehemently defending the couple against suggestions they neglected their son Nick, calling such claims “an insult to every parent” as their son faces murder charges in their deaths.

Sources close to Rob and Michele Reiner are pushing back against allegations that the couple didn’t devote enough attention to their son Nick, who now faces murder charges in their deaths. The defense comes as commentators like Megyn Kelly have suggested the Reiners prioritized their careers over parenting.

“To say that Rob and Michele weren’t as loving as parents get or that they didn’t try everything they could to support Nick is an insult to every parent, especially those with a child suffering from mental health issues,” a source close to the family revealed.

The Family’s Response to Criticism

The insider emphasized that Rob, the celebrated filmmaker behind classics like When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride, and Michele, a respected producer and photographer, “did an admirable job balancing parenting and work, but their kids are all adults now and they had tried so hard for years.”

A second source was even more direct about the challenges the Reiners faced with their son: “At the end of the day, Nick didn’t take the help seriously. This was true for years and years. His issues were far, far out of his parents’ control.”

The family insider described Nick as “unreliable” but also “convincing and intelligent,” noting that his family maintained empathy despite his struggles. “They never lost hope in him, even when he was scaring them or making their lives harder,” the source added.

Megyn Kelly’s Controversial Comments

The family’s defense comes in response to comments made by political commentator Megyn Kelly on her SiriusXM show earlier this week. Kelly suggested that the Reiners’ deaths “may involve parents who were focused on the wrong thing, like careers instead of their kid.”

Kelly’s remarks generated significant backlash in her own comments section, with one follower writing, “I was disappointed on your commentary on their parenting style.” Another added, “Kindness is what we need these [sic] Megyn, not judgement.”

Nick Reiner’s Long-Standing Struggles

Nick Reiner, 32, has been open about his battles with addiction and homelessness that began in his teenage years. In a 2016 interview with People, Nick estimated he had been in drug treatment 18 times during his teenage years.

“If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless,” Nick said at the time, revealing he had experienced homelessness in Maine, New Jersey, and Texas.

The Reiners’ efforts to help their son included collaborating on the 2015 film Being Charlie, a semi-autobiographical project about addiction that incorporated elements of Nick’s struggles. Both father and son said making the movie helped repair their strained relationship.

In a recent interview on NPR’s Fresh Air to promote Spinal Tap II, Rob Reiner addressed his parenting approach directly. “I was never, ever too busy,” he stated. “I mean, if anything, I was the other way, you know, I was more hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help.”

Rob acknowledged making mistakes but emphasized his commitment to his children, which included Nick, Jake, Romy, and Tracy, his adopted daughter from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.

This sentiment echoed his 2016 comments to Access Hollywood, where he declared, “He’s my son, I love him. He’s more important than anything that could happen to me.”

The Tragic Outcome

Nick Reiner now faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, who were found dead in their Los Angeles home. The county medical examiner confirmed Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, died on December 14th from “multiple sharp force injuries.”

Prosecutors are planning to pursue an increased sentence based on the special circumstance of multiple murders. Nick has been denied bail as the case proceeds.

Why This Defense Matters Now

The timing of this family defense is crucial for several reasons:

  • It addresses public speculation about the Reiners’ parenting amid tragic circumstances
  • It provides context about the long-term challenges the family faced with Nick’s addiction
  • It counters narrative-building that could influence public perception during legal proceedings
  • It highlights the complex reality of parenting children with severe mental health and addiction issues

The sources close to the Reiners emphasize that the couple’s efforts extended far beyond what the public witnessed, including numerous rehabilitation attempts and professional collaborations aimed at helping their son.
