Ringo Starr’s 1974 No. 1 hit ‘You’re Sixteen’ wasn’t just a successful cover; it was a legendary collaboration. The song’s iconic kazoo-like solo wasn’t a kazoo at all, but a spontaneous vocal performance by Paul McCartney, showcasing the enduring magic of The Beatles even after their breakup.

By 1974, Ringo Starr had already proven his solo star power with the massive success of “Photograph.” However, his second chart-topping single was a fascinating twist of fate—a cover of a 1960s classic that became a legendary collaboration, featuring a secret performance from a former Beatles bandmate.

The song was “You’re Sixteen,” originally a hit for Johnny Burnette in 1960. While Burnette’s version peaked at No. 8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, Starr’s cover would go all the way to No. 1 in 1974, introducing the track to a new generation and cementing its place in pop culture history. The original track was written by the legendary Sherman Brothers, the same masterminds behind Disney classics like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “It’s A Small World.”

The most intriguing element of Ringo’s version, however, was its unforgettable solo. For years, it was widely believed that Paul McCartney had played the kazoo-like part on the track. While McCartney is indeed credited on the liner notes of the album Ringo for playing the solo, the truth was even more remarkable.

According to the website Session Days, the song’s producer Richard Perry revealed that the sound wasn’t created by a kazoo at all. Instead, it was McCartney himself, singing spontaneously as the track was played back. The producer explained, “In fact, the solo on ‘You’re Sixteen,’ which sounds like a kazoo or something, was Paul singing very spontaneously as we played that track back, so he’s singing the solo on that.”

This spontaneous moment of genius is a perfect example of the creative chemistry that defined The Beatles. Even years after the band’s official dissolution, the members could still create magic together. Ringo’s version also featured significant musical changes from the original, including a bridge section that shifted to a minor key, a departure from the original’s major keys.

The song’s success was bolstered by an all-star cast of musicians. Along with McCartney’s secret vocal solo, the track featured Harry Nilsson on backing vocals, pianist Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voormann on bass, Jim Keltner on drums, and guitarists Vini Poncia and Jimmy Calvert. This collection of talent helped elevate the cover to a new level.

The song’s cultural footprint expanded beyond the charts. Burnette’s original recording was famously featured in the 1973 blockbuster film American Graffiti, starring a young Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, and a pre-Star Wars Harrison Ford. Ringo Starr’s version, in turn, received its own visual treatment in a 1978 TV special, Ringo. The accompanying music video featured a then-newly famous Carrie Fisher, fresh off her role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars, playing the love interest to Ringo’s character.

Decades later, the story behind “You’re Sixteen” remains a beloved piece of music trivia. It serves as a powerful reminder of the unique bond between the four members of The Beatles and their incredible ability to create timeless music, both together and as solo artists. Ringo Starr continues to perform and record music, with his 2025 album Look Up being a testament to his enduring legacy in the industry.
