There were plenty of outstanding fashion moments on the Met Gala carpet this evening, but everyone was holding their breath for Rihanna. While singer-turned-mogul has become known for arriving more than fashionably late to the event, it seemed as though she was going to skip the party altogether for the second year in a row—until just after 10 p.m. when she walked those iconic museum steps showing off her newly announced pregnancy.
Even before she shut down the carpet, Rihanna had already managed to make the entrance of the night. That’s because, just hours before the gala began, Rihanna was seen arriving at The Carlyle Hotel, in a pewter sweater and skirt combo that revealed some major news: she’s expecting her third child with partner A$AP Rocky, who also happens to be one of the gala’s co-chairs!
Ever a pregnancy style inspiration, the singer accented her monochrome look with a furry stole adorned with a vintage Briony Raymond brooch and tied it all together with Messika High Jewelry—and a bucket hat.
Rihanna was a surprise no-show at last year’s Met Gala. Though she had reportedly planned to attend, even teasing ahead of time that her outfit was going to be “real simple,” her plans changed at the last minute when the Grammy-winner came down with the flu.
A former co-chair for the gala herself, in previous years, she’s stunned on the event’s steps in dramatic outfits, like the ornate black and white minidress and coat, complete with bishop’s hat, that she wore to the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” themed carpet in 2018, a floor-sweeping fur-trimmed cape in canary yellow by designer Guo Pei that she wore in 2015 for the “China: Through The Looking Glass” exhibit, and the billowing, snow white gown she donned for the 2023 gala honoring “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” The latter also happens to have a special connection for today, seeing as at the time she wore it, she was expecting her second child, Riot.
