Ricki Lake Opens Up About Wildfire Loss, NYC Rebirth & Mental Health Advocacy After Traumatic Year

Ricki Lake’s year was defined by trauma — losing her Malibu home to wildfires, relocating to New York City with her husband Ross Burningham, and launching a powerful mental health initiative. Now, she’s speaking out about resilience, healing, and the urgent need for empathy — backed by a new film festival spotlighting young voices.

After her Malibu home was destroyed by catastrophic wildfires last January — a loss that left her and her husband Ross Burningham homeless — Ricki Lake made an impulsive yet transformative decision: move to New York City. “He took a leap of faith,” she tells onlytrustedinfo.com, referring to Burningham, who had never spent more than a week there before. “And honestly, it’s been the best thing we could have done for both of us.”

Despite the upheaval, Lake describes 2025 as “so traumatizing, so harrowing.” Yet, she now calls NYC home — not just geographically, but emotionally. “I’ve created this home here — it feels very much like home,” she says. “We still are pinching ourselves that we live here, that we ride the subway every single day.”

Her journey since the fire has been one of healing and purpose. Though still recovering, Lake is actively rebuilding her life — physically, mentally, and spiritually — while channeling her pain into advocacy. She credits the move to NYC for helping her reconnect with her sons, Milo and Owen, and rediscover parts of herself she’d long buried.

“It’s wild,” she admits, “to be back in New York after leaving 22 years ago after my show ended.” This time, however, her return isn’t nostalgic — it’s intentional, rooted in growth. “I choose to find the light in the darkness,” she declares. “I do think perspective is so much of it. I have so much to be grateful for this year.”

Lake’s advocacy work centers on Community Access, a nonprofit she deeply respects — one that provides affordable housing and job training programs for those experiencing homelessness and mental illness. “Not only do they provide affordable permanent housing for people suffering with mental health and being homeless, they also have programs that help them get jobs, help them learn to write a resume…it’s incredible,” she explains.

In November, Community Access released the Changing Minds Young Filmmaker Festival, a compilation of ten short films produced by young people aged 15 to 25. Each film offers raw, personal narratives about their own mental health journeys — from depression to bipolar disorder — showcasing stories that inspire empathy and community.

“It’s inspiring, it builds conversation and community,” Lake says. “All of us, can put ourselves in the shoes of young people struggling to find their way.” As someone who entered the industry young and lost her second husband Christian Evans to suicide after he battled bipolar disorder, Lake sees this project as profoundly personal — and necessary.

She adds, “I want more joy and giving and just people being represented and heard and supported.” In a world saturated with negativity, Lake believes these stories offer hope — and a call to action.

Her message extends beyond her own experience. She cites Rob Reiner and his wife Michele — whose deaths were linked to their son Nick’s schizophrenia diagnosis — as another reason why mental health must be prioritized. “I feel like everyone knows someone [struggling with mental health],” she says. “And quite frankly, the world we’re living in now, we all have some sort of mental illness. We all suffer, whether it’s from loneliness or dependency on self-medicating.”

Reflecting on her own past struggles, Lake admits she’s been guilty of “doing things that weren’t necessarily kind to my body because of just trying to get through the day, and just numb out a little bit.” Her recovery — and her commitment to others — is now her greatest focus.

The Changing Minds Young Filmmaker Festival movie is available for rent on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Google Play. The 2026 competition accepts submissions until January 31 — inviting more young voices to share their truths.
