Rock and roll history is filled with stories of legendary musicians who died long before fans were ready to say goodbye — and of all these tragic losses, the death of Jerry Garcia 30 years ago today will always be one of the most deeply mourned, as Deadheads around the world continue to miss the iconic singer and guitar player.
Garcia was reportedly exhausted from years of relentless touring with the Grateful Dead in the months leading up to his death. After falling into a diabetic coma in 1986, he tried making lifestyle changes (but apparently didn’t always stick with them). In the years that followed, he continued to struggle with addiction, until he finally checked into Betty Ford Clinic in July 1995. Two weeks later, he moved to Serenity Knolls, a Bay Area holistic health retreat — but he wouldn’t stay there for long.
What was Jerry Garcia’s Cause of Death?
Garcia died in his room at Serenity Knolls on August 9, 1995, at the age of 53. The official cause of death was a massive heart attack.
In a 2022 interview with the Washington Post, Garcia’s Grateful Dead bandmate Bob Weir pointed to the pressures of fame as the reason for his death.
“The deification that those folks made of Jerry is basically what killed him,” he said, adding, “It disgusted him, and rightly so.”
Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter reflected on the last time he ever talked to Garcia in a 2015 interview with the Hollywood Reporter, noting that the late icon seemed to sense it would be their final conversation.
“The last time I ever spoke to Jerry, he called me on the phone about a week or two before he died,” Hunter recalled.
“We were getting a writing session together. Looking back, the conversation was rather strange on his part,” he continued. “He started complimenting me, which is something he had never done before. He said, ‘Your words never stuck in my throat.’ And I thought, ‘What? This is coming from Jerry?’ Because we took each other 100 percent for granted. It just wasn’t how we spoke to one another and boy…talking like that was just not Jerry’s nature.”
“Generally, I’d give him a new batch of songs and he’d say, ‘Oh crap, Hunter!’” he added, laughing. “He’d be angry because it meant he had to work. He said in an interview once that he’d rather sit and toss cards into a hat than write a song.”
