Reggie Theus’ Unprecedented Dual Role: How Bethune-Cookman Is Quietly Building March Madness History

Reggie Theus, the only Division I coach also serving as athletic director, has engineered one of college basketball’s most improbable rises, leading Bethune-Cookman from a nine-win team to SWAC regular-season champions and the cusp of the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth—a feat that would make the HBCU an instant March Madness Cinderella story.

Bethune-Cookman head coach Reggie Theus has a chat with his team during the game against Southern, Monday, Jan. 12, 2026.

When Bethune-Cookman University called in 2021, Reggie Theus was content in semi-retirement. The former NBA All-Star, who played 13 seasons in the league and later starred in the sitcom “Hang Time,” was golfing in Southern California and volunteering as a Division II coach. The university, a historically Black institution in Daytona Beach, Florida, wanted him as athletic director—a role with no experience required. Theus counter-offered with an unprecedented condition: he would hire himself as men’s basketball coach. The school agreed, creating a dual-title arrangement that is the only one of its kind in Division I college sports.

Five years later, that unorthodox decision has positioned the Wildcats on the brink of history. Bethune-Cookman won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season title and enters this week’s conference tournament as the top seed, seeking the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance. The school is one of 40 eligible Division I men’s basketball teams that has never made it to March Madness, and the only team from the SWAC on that list.

From Nine Wins to Conference Kings: The Quantifiable Turnaround

Theus inherited a program with no NCAA Tournament appearances and a recent history of minimal postseason play. In his first season, 2021-22, the Wildcats won just nine games. The progression since has been steady: 12 wins in 2022-23, 17-17 in 2023-24, 15-15 in 2024-25, and this season’s 17-14 overall record (14-4 in SWAC play). This year, B-CU led the conference in field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense, rebounding margin, and blocked shots—statistical dominance in every phase of the game.

The non-conference schedule was a brutal gauge of progress. The Wildcats played road games at No. 1 Arizona, No. 25 Indiana, and No. 20 Auburn, taking the Tigers to overtime in a five-point loss. Facing such competition exposed weaknesses but also built resilience. “It was a really cool experience,” said graduate forward Ariel Bland. “The environment is probably the biggest thing… we don’t really have a lot of people rooting for us, but I feel like it also brought us closer.”

The Transfer Portal Chess Game: Assembling a Cohesive Unit From Nomads

Building a roster in the modern era of the transfer portal and NIL is a cultural challenge. The Wildcats began the 2025-26 season with 10 newcomers and just four returning players. Theus embraced this reality, prioritizing team bonding through paintball outings and group therapy sessions. His messaging centers on consistency, direct communication paired with genuine care, and an emphasis on film study, character, and humility.

Key to the roster construction was the return of leading scorer Jakobi Heady. After averaging 15 points and 6.5 rebounds per game at Central Michigan in 2024-25, Heady came back to Bethune-Cookman driven by his relationship with Theus and a singular goal. “I thought, coming back, we’ll have a great chance of winning it all,” Heady said. “Some days I feel like I shouldn’t have left, but sometimes God has different things for you. So coming back has been a blessing.”

The starting lineup features a blend of experience and high-upside transfers:

  • Jakobi Heady (Senior Wing): 18.1 points per game, team’s primary scoring threat.
  • Quentin Heady (Wing): One of five players averaging double-figure scoring.
  • Seneca Willoughby (Senior Point Guard): Pilots the offense in his third season.
  • Daniel Rouzan (Forward): Dominant interior presence.
  • Ariel Bland (Forward): Team’s best shot-blocker, brings energy off the bench.
  • Arterio Morris (Guard): Former McDonald’s All-American transfer from Texas; Theus often says the team has “six starters.”

“Everyone’s bought into their roles,” Bland explained. “Everyone wants to win and that’s what has been our No. 1 goal. So it’s not everyone trying to go ahead and get their 20 (points) or get their stats up.”

The Coaching Blueprint: Tarkanian, Pitino, and Fratello Forged

Theus’ coaching philosophy is a synthesis of his experiences: the pressure defense of his UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian, the structured precision of NBA coaches Mike Fratello and Hubie Brown, and the offensive creativity of Rick Pitino, under whom he coached at Louisville. The Wildcats use their big men in an inside-out attack but can play at varying tempos. Their athleticism allows for aggressive switching and occasional full-court presses to disrupt opponents.

Balancing the demands of being both AD and head coach is a monumental task Theus has met head-on. Since arriving, he has spearheaded renovations of baseball, softball, and football facilities and upgraded locker rooms for volleyball and both basketball teams. He secured millions in donations, including a six-figure gift from Charles Barkley. This January, university president Dr. Albert Mosley promoted Theus to Vice President of Athletics on a three-year deal, a testament to the arrangement’s success. “He handles it well. Hat off to coach, man,” said Jakobi Heady. “He teaches you how to be a pro on and off the court.”

The March Madness Threshold: Pressure, History, and a Community’s Dream

The Wildcats’ goal was never hidden. They discussed the NCAA Tournament in their first team meeting last summer. Theus constantly reinforces the mantra: “Hungry and humble. Do your job.” Only two current players have NCAA Tournament experience: Morris (Texas’ 2023 Elite Eight run) and Bland (redshirt at UC Santa Barbara’s 2023 team).

Campus excitement has grown with each win, with home game crowds swelling. “It ain’t just the people that are on the men’s basketball team,” Heady said. “It’s the whole school. It’s the whole community that wants to see us get there.” Despite being the SWAC’s top seed and holding a potential automatic bid, the team resists the “paper champion” label. “We got to put our heads down and work,” Bland stated. “The most important game is the next game.”

The confluence of Theus’ unique leadership, a culturally bonded roster of transfers, and a season of statistical dominance has Bethune-Cookman positioned for a landmark moment. An NCAA Tournament berth would not only fulfill a 45-year Division I dream but also validate an experimental dual-role model that could reshape how mid-major and HBCU programs approach leadership and development.
