Country music icon Reba McEntire shared a deeply emotional moment on The Voice, tearing up as she remembered her late stepson, Brandon Blackstock, who tragically passed away at age 48 from melanoma. Her poignant words, spurred by a cancer-themed performance, highlighted their “precious” relationship and the lasting impact of his mischievous spirit and joy.

Country music superstar and The Voice coach Reba McEntire recently moved audiences to tears during a poignant moment on the show. The emotional scene unfolded on the Monday, October 27 episode of season 28, where a contestant’s performance about battling cancer brought the painful memory of her late stepson, Brandon Blackstock, to the forefront.

An Unforgettable Performance and a Mother’s Grief

The catalyst for McEntire’s emotional outpouring was Aubrey Nicole, an artist from Team Reba, who delivered a powerful rendition of Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.” This moving song chronicles a couple facing a cancer diagnosis, and Aubrey dedicated her performance to her father, a cancer survivor now in remission.

As Aubrey’s performance concluded, Snoop Dogg, a fellow coach, noted his unfamiliarity with the song, prompting McEntire to share her deep connection to it. With her voice breaking, she stated, “I lost my oldest son because he did not win with cancer.” Snoop Dogg promptly offered her tissues, a gesture that underscored the raw emotion of the moment. She continued, explaining that such songs serve as “a real reminder that life goes on, and we sing songs about it so we can remember the ones around us that we love so much, that we lean on at times like this.”

Remembering Brandon Blackstock: A “Precious” Connection

Brandon Blackstock, the stepson McEntire referred to, tragically passed away on August 7 at the age of 48, following a battle with melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer. His fight against the disease had reportedly lasted more than three years. McEntire’s relationship with Brandon was exceptionally close, as she recounted in a recent interview with People magazine.

She described their bond as “precious,” recalling how Brandon entered her life when he was just four years old. When she married his father, Narvel Blackstock, in 1989, Brandon was a teenager. “Along with his mom and dad, I helped raise him, along with [step kids] Shawna and Chassidy. They were my kids,” McEntire shared, emphasizing the profound parental role she embraced.

McEntire painted a vivid picture of Brandon as a man full of life and humor. She fondly remembered his “mischievousness” and his love for pulling pranks, especially at the Starstruck Entertainment office in Nashville. His playful spirit and ability to bring joy to everyone he met are cherished memories that will not be forgotten.

The Wider Blackstock Family and a Shared Loss

Brandon Blackstock was not only Reba McEntire’s stepson but also the son of her former husband, Narvel Blackstock, to whom she was married from 1989 to 2015. He was also widely known as the ex-husband of Grammy-winning singer Kelly Clarkson. Clarkson had hinted at his illness just one day before his passing, underscoring the suddenness and grief felt by the family, as confirmed by Parade.

Brandon was a father to four children: Savannah and Seth from a previous marriage, and River, 11, and Remington, 9, with Kelly Clarkson. Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock also shared a son, Shelby McEntire Blackstock, born in 1990. The Blackstock family’s announcement of Brandon’s death highlighted his courageous battle:

  • “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away.”
  • “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years.”
  • “He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family.”
  • “We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

A Legacy of Love and Song

The emotional moment on The Voice served as a powerful reminder of how deeply loss can affect individuals, even those in the public eye. McEntire’s vulnerability resonated with countless viewers who have experienced similar grief, reinforcing the idea that music often provides solace and a way to honor the memories of loved ones. Brandon Blackstock’s legacy, characterized by his humor, joy, and the profound love of his family, will undoubtedly continue to be remembered and cherished.
