Raising Cane’s Competitor Throws Major Shade at Popular Chain originally appeared on Parade.
Raising Cane’s has been “raising” in just about every way. They have locations popping up everywhere, and they just overtook KFC in sales, becoming the third most popular fried chicken chain in the country. With Raising Cane’s dramatic rise showing no signs of slowing down, its competitors are beginning to lock in, aim, and fire.
Raising Cane’s bread and butter—or rather, Texas toast and butter—is chicken fingers. Wingstop’s, obviously, is wings. But that hasn’t stopped them from firing shots at their indirect competitor.

Wingstop is taking a page out of Taco Bell’s playbook. Remember when Taco Bell tried to trademark “Taco Tuesday”? Well, now Wingstop is trying to trademark “National Chicken Tender Day.” The company made the announcement in a press release on July 24. “Some say that chicken fingers, strips and tenders are the same, but Wingstop isn’t buying it,” a Wingstop exec said in the release. ““We use premium tenderloin in our chicken tenders – the ‘filet mignon of chicken’…” they continued. “…Wingstop is giving the finger to fingers….”
The shade thrown at “chicken fingers” is a subtle jab at Raising Cane’s. But even more overtly, Wingstop has declare National Chicken Tender Day to be July 27—which Raising Cane’s has been calling “National Chicken Finger Day” since 2010. Shots fired!
Raising Cane’s has already been drumming up hype in anticipation of National Chicken Finger Day. Snoop Dogg worked a shift at a Las Vegas location last week, taking orders, manning the fryer, and even handing out copies of his latest album.
On the “holiday,” Cane’s will be giving combo box buyers a bonus chicken finger for free. According to them, Snoop Dogg will be footing the bill.
