The illegal migrant who brutally raped and murdered Rachel Morin will spend the rest of his life in prison, a Maryland judge decreed Monday.

Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, a 24-year-old Salvadoran national living unlawfully in the U.S., was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, in addition to another life sentence and 40 years, according to the Harford County, Maryland, District Attorney’s Office. The sentencing puts to rest a murder case that captivated the country and ignited a national debate over illegal migrant crime. “Arguably, Harford County has never seen a case or a Defendant more deserving of every single day of the maximum sentence this Court imposed today,” Harford County State’s Attorney Alison Healey said in a public statement.

“This has been a long and grueling process for Rachel’s family, and it is our hope that this sentence provides some sense of justice as they close this chapter and move forward in their grief and toward healing,” Healey continued.

In April, a jury found Martinez-Hernandez guilty of first degree murder, first degree rape, third degree sexual offense and kidnapping for the death of Rachel Morin.

Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five children, was “viciously” beaten, raped and murdered while enjoying a hiking trail in August 2023, according to prosecutors. While taking a walk on the Ma & Pa Trail in Harford County, Maryland, she was attacked by Martinez-Hernandez, who pulled her roughly 150 feet away from the main trail, per data on her phone and Apple Watch.

Law enforcement officials in Oklahoma eventually nabbed the Salvadoran murderer in June 2024 and charged him for Morin’s death. At the time of his arrest, Martinez-Hernandez claimed to have never lived in Maryland, but prosecutors produced multiple witnesses and business records proving he was living in Bel Air, Maryland, at the time of the killing. He was also wanted for the murder of another woman in his home country of El Salvador.

Shortly after his arrest, Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed that Martinez-Hernandez had illegally entered the U.S. on multiple occasions in 2023. Border Patrol agents apprehended him on Jan. 19, Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 of that year, expelling him back to Mexico each time, according to authorities.

The Salvadoran national subsequently entered the U.S. unlawfully again in February 2023, under the Biden administration, without detection by border authorities. His immigration status became a flashpoint in the national debate over the border crisis.

Morin’s mother, Patty Morin, and her family became vocal supporters of then-candidate Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. The Trump administration on Monday spoke about Martinez-Hernandez’s sentencing.

“Today, Rachel Morin’s killer was sentenced to life without parole for her brutal murder,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a public statement. “This criminal illegal alien should have never been in our country in the first place.”

“Rachel should still be here watching her 5 children grow up,” Noem continued. “We hear far too much in the mainstream media about sob stories of gang members and criminal illegals and not enough about their victims. God bless Rachel and her family.”
