On July 29, 1981, Princess Diana married then-Prince Charles in what would become known as the royal wedding of the century. Watched by more than 750 million viewers worldwide, the ceremony felt like a fairytale come to life. But beneath the spectacle, Diana’s wedding dress carried a hidden and symbolic detail, one that only a few knew about at the time, and which subtly foreshadowed the fate of her and Charles’ union.
Diana’s wedding dress remains iconic for its record-breaking length, handcrafted embroidery, and influence on bridal fashion for decades. The gown was jaw-dropping, capturing the essence of ’80s excess with a romantic, princess-like quality.
However, there was one design element of the dress only known to dressmakers David and Elizabeth Emmanuel. A tiny trinket was sewn in the back of Diana’s gown to give her and Charles a good foot forward in their marriage.
Per PEOPLE Magazine, the designers hid an 18-carat gold horseshoe charm studded with white diamonds within the dress. Although it wasn’t visible to onlookers or in photographs, the charm was reportedly located in the back of her gown.

Diana’s wedding dress had other hidden tokens added by the designers. One was a tiny blue bow in Diana’s waistband. Diana also had a second blue bow on her silk garter.
Another secret detail in Diana’s wedding ensemble was a love note to her future husband contained in her shoes. The Daily Mail reported that on the soles’ arches, the initials “C” and “D,” for Charles and Diana, were painted under each heel with a heart in the center, encircled by a floral pattern.
Clive Shilton, then a cobbler for the rich and famous, met Diana at the dress shop of designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel, and was hired to create her wedding shoes. The footwear was covered in 542 sequins and 132 pearls.
These significant mementos gave Charles and Diana’s union a hopeful beginning. Ultimately, the couple’s marriage was fraught with difficulties, including incompatibility, infidelity, and distrust.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles were married for 15 years. They welcomed sons Prince William and Prince Harry before divorcing in 1996.
