It might be August, when members of the royal family typically take a break from public duties, but of course Princess Anne is still working. The Princess Royal spent yesterday in Dublin today on a trip that was described as underscoring “the deep and enduring friendship between the United Kingdom and Ireland.”
Anne warmly greeted President Higgins and his wife Sabina in their official residence Áras an Uachtaráin. Videos posted online showed the trio commenting on the weather before Anne signed the visitors’ book. The British Embassy said the meeting, which took place as Higgins approaches the end of his second and final term as President, served as “a moment to acknowledge his long-standing contribution to Irish public life and the strength and value of the relationship between the two countries.”
Anne chose a green outfit for her day out, with a pale green jacket and dark green skirt. She accessorized with a gold brooch in the shape of a horse, particularly appropriate because she attended the official opening day of the 150th Dublin Horse Show at the Royal Dublin Society. The Princess’s choice of outfit had echoes of Queen Elizabeth’s diplomatic dressing during her historical 2011 trip to Ireland, when she stepped off the plane wearing a green outfit and was dubbed the “emerald queen.” Kate Middleton also wore green when she visited Ireland in 2020 as did Camilla, then Duchess of Cornwall, in 2022.
At the Dublin Horse Show, former Olympic equestrian Anne presented rosettes and spoke with representatives from equestrian charities. “Her sincere interest in therapeutic equestrian work has always meant a great deal to us,” charity Festina Lenté posted on Instagram.
“Her Royal Highness has visited Ireland on many occasions, including as patron of the Scottish Rugby Union for their biannual Six Nations games here. Her visit this week reflects her lifelong interest in equestrianism and charitable work,” British Ambassador to Ireland, Paul Johnston, said in a statement via the British Embassy in Ireland.
Anne’s outing comes after her son Peter Phillips, 47, recently announced his engagement to Harriet Sperling. No date has been set for the wedding.
