  • Prince William will reportedly appear in an upcoming episode of Clarkson’s Farm on Amazon Prime Video

  • Host Jeremy Clarkson ignited controversy with his comments in an article about Meghan Markle for The Sun published in December 2022, which the publisher pulled soon after

  • Both Clarkson and The Sun apologized for the piece denounced as misogynistic

Prince William will reportedly appear on the next season of Clarkson’s Farm, making a cameo two years after host Jeremy Clarkson’s misogynistic comments about Meghan Markle caused controversy.

On May 11, The Times ran a profile on Clarkson, 65, and reported that “Prince William features in the next-but-one series of Clarkson’s Farm.” Season four of the hit series premieres on Amazon Prime on Friday, May 23, taking viewers into the next era of adventures on Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds, including his purchase of a pub.

While the Prince of Wales, 42, wasn’t spotted in the official trailer for the new season, the BBC reported in March that he would appear on the show. The report emerged when William attended an event celebrating the Duchy of Cornwall’s next generation of farming tenants in Bristol, England, in March and met Clarkson’s Farm stars Kaleb Cooper and Charlie Ireland.

A breakout moment from Prince William’s meeting with Cooper and Ireland was when he relayed a hilarious message from his eldest son, Prince George.

“You’ve got George watching now,” William told Cooper, Hello! magazine reported. “I said to him, ‘What shall I say if I meet Kaleb?’ He said, ‘Tell Kaleb to mind his language.’ “

According to the outlet, Cooper took the advice about his swearing in stride. “I did get told off for swearing too much…I tried to stop, but at the same time, it’s awesome. That’s what I like about the whole show…I’ve had so many people thank me, going, ‘You brought the family together.’ It’s a great feeling,” he said.

Cooper is the farm manager and a popular personality in the docuseries, which follows Clarkson’s successes and struggles of running a large farm. Clarkson had long been in the public eye as a presenter of the BBC auto show Top Gear, with his foray into farming a professional pivot. Season one of Clarkson’s Farm premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2021 and, as of 2023, was cited as the streamer’s most-watched original series in the U.K., Deadline said.

The Times reported in its May 11 interview with Clarkson that the upbeat series has drawn “tens of millions of viewers.”

News of William’s anticipated cameo on Clarkson’s Farm comes two and a half years after Clarkson wrote an article about the Duchess of Sussex that was widely criticized and eventually pulled by its publisher. In December 2022, the presenter wrote an article for The Sun about hating Prince Harry’s wife “on a cellular level” with disturbing language about dreaming to see people throw excrement at her “when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain.”

Clarkson later clarified in a tweet that this was “a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones,” acknowledging that it “has gone down badly with a great many people.” The article sparked immediate backlash, and The Sun removed the piece from its website and archives.

Both The Sun and Clarkson issued apologies, with the paper saying it was “sincerely sorry.”

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex disputed Clarkson’s claim that he apologized to both Meghan, 43, and Prince Harry, 40, saying in a statement to PEOPLE that Clarkson only contacted Harry.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE in January 2023, the spokesperson said, “On December 25, 2022, Mr. Clarkson wrote solely to Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex. The contents of his correspondence were marked Private and Confidential.”

“While a new public apology has been issued today by Mr. Clarkson, what remains to be addressed is his long standing pattern of writing articles that spread hate rhetoric, dangerous conspiracy theories and misogyny,” it continued. “Unless each of his other pieces were also written ‘in a hurry,’ as he states, it is clear that this is not an isolated incident shared in haste but rather a series of articles shared in hate.”

In June 2023, the Independent Press Standards Organisation of the U.K. upheld a complaint about sexism surrounding Clarkson’s offensive story about Meghan in a historic first. The independent U.K. press regulator received over 25,000 complaints about the piece, which the BBC reported was an all-time high.

“Women are no longer prepared to endure the sexism that generations of women have been subjected to…This is a big step forward for women in the battle against sexism in the media,” said Harriet Harman, Chair of the Fawcett Society, one of the groups that lodged the complaint.

Women’s issues and gender equality are a focus of the Duchess of Sussex’s public work. Meghan’s biography on the sussex.com website, which she shares with Prince Harry, describes her as “a feminist and champion of human rights and gender equity,” with her lifelong advocacy for women and girls “a constant thread in her humanitarian and business ventures.”
