Prince William and Kate Middleton mark 14 years of marriage today and are making a rare public appearance on their anniversary. The royal couple arrived on the Isle of Mull at lunchtime local time to carry out two days of engagements highlighting rural Scottish communities. Looking casual in boots, trousers and a shirt and jacket, Kate arrived with her husband at their first stop of the town of Tobermory, where they were set to visit a community hub. William and Kate are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, titles that have been held by the male heir to the Scottish throne and his wife for centuries. As well as Mull, they will visit the tiny neighboring island of Iona, taking the public ferry between the two islands.
“Welcome to the Inner Hebrides,” Kensington Palace posted on social media today. “From exploring how islanders are protecting their natural world, to meeting young families who are shaping the future of rural life, we’re excited for an inspiring two days here celebrating the power of community and connection.”
While they often use social media to mark their anniversary with new pictures of messages, the couple does not usually make a public appearance on this day, making this anniversary particularly significant. The trip is also Kate’s biggest work outing since returning to royal duties following chemotherapy. The last time she was seen publicly was in mid-March for St Patrick’s Day.
William and Kate met and fell in love as students at the Scottish University of St Andrews. The Daily Mail reported today that they stayed on the island of Mull in 2005 with friends not long before their graduation, renting a cottage in Tobermory.
The couple was sent best wishes on their anniversary today, including from Westminster Abbey where they wed in 2011. Ahead of their arrival in Scotland, it was announced that the Royal Foundation is providing funding for two new rangers on the Isles of Mull and Iona as well as providing grants to upgrade community spaces on the Isle of Mull.
