Last week, the UK Charity Commission’s published the findings of its investigation into Sentebale, the charity Prince Harry co-founded alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006. Harry and Seeiso resigned from the nonprofit earlier this year, and following the investigation report, a source close to Harry told T&C that the Prince was “utterly devastated” by what he considers to be an “effective hostile takeover of this charity.”
What comes next for Prince Harry with regard to his work in the region is unclear, but there has been speculation that he would start a new nonprofit operating in the same space as Sentebale. T&C understands this is not definite, just a possibility at this stage.
“The Duke remains absolutely committed to continuing the work he started, supporting the children and young people of Lesotho and Botswana, nearly 20 years ago,” a spokesperson for Prince Harry told T&C yesterday. “In what form that support takes — no decisions have been made. All options remain on the table; whether that be starting a new charity or working to support pre-existing charities operating in the same sector in the region.”
It’s unclear if any new venture would also involve Prince Seeiso.
When the royals resigned in March, they said in a joint statement, “Nearly 20 years ago, we founded Sentebale in honor of our mothers. Sentebale means ‘forget-me-not’ in Sesotho, the local language of Lesotho, and it’s what we’ve always promised for the young people we’ve served through this charity. Today is no different. With heavy hearts, we have resigned from our roles as patrons of the organization until further notice, in support of and solidarity with the board of trustees who have had to do the same. It is devastating that the relationship between the charity’s trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation.”
