Less than a decade ago, password sharing was almost a given, with some streaming platforms like Netflix even encouraging users to confide their login details to their close friends and family members.

But in an age where more and more film and television providers are switching over to streaming, platforms like Netflix and Max are cracking down on password-sharing among their customers.

In particular, as reported byVariety, Warner Bros. Discovery will soon roll out a more aggressive stance when it comes to users sharing their passwords with non-paying viewers.

On a recent Q1 earnings call for the company, Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO and president of global streaming and games, JB Perrette, shared added security measures to prevent users’ passwords from expanding beyond their households.

This initiative will take approximately 12 to 18 months to fully implement, with Perrette believing the upcoming strategy will provide a significant boost to their overall revenue.

To better attract new users, Max has also recently introduced Max’s Extra Member Add-On feature for U.S. subscribers. For $7.99 per month, this feature allows Max customers to share their account information with users outside of their household, allowing them to create a self-contained profile account under the same subscription.

Between this feature and the company’s upcoming crackdown on password-sharing, Perrette is confident Max will only continue to flourish as a worthwhile alternative to Netflix, Paramount+ and other prominent streaming providers.

For the time being, Perrette has said that Max will take a “very soft messaging” stance for password sharing throughout the remainder of the year. However, that stance “will start getting firmer and more visible to subscribers over the months to come.”

In the months ahead, Perrette went on to say Max’s outlook on password-sharing will eventually become “more assertive over the course of the back half the year and really into ’26,” highlighting the app’s direction for the foreseeable future.
