Before you break out your baked bean stock in preparation for grilling season, flip those cans over and read the bottoms. More than 4,500 cases of Yellowstone canned baked beans sold at Walmart, Meijer, and other common retailers were recalled because they contain an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a statement.
Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans were recalled by their manufacturer, Vietti Food Group of Nashville, Tennessee. Despite the label not saying so, the 15-ounce cans contained soy, and consuming such product without knowing could result in a serious, potentially life-threatening reaction in those who are allergic to the legume.
According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology, symptoms of an allergic reaction to soy may include vomitting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, wheezing, cough, throat tightness, hives, rash, and/or dizziness and confusion. Soy allergies are one of the most common in young children, the college says and rarely, but sometimes, cause life-threatening anaphylaxis.
