  • A mass shooting in Atlanta early Monday left one person dead and ten others injured, including an 18-year-old in critical condition

  • Police are searching for three men and one woman believed to be responsible

  • The incident was one of 12 violent episodes over the weekend that injured 29 people and killed two people in the Atlanta area

A mass shooting in a busy area of Atlanta early Monday left one person dead and 10 others injured, police said.

Officers responded to the Sweet Auburn neighborhood around 1:30 a.m. on July 28 and found 11 people had been shot, one of them fatally, Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said at a news conference, per the AP.

Medical professionals pronounced 27-year-old Santos J. Wyatt dead at the scene, the outlet reported, citing the medical examiner’s office. The other ten victims – seven men and three women, were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries, according to Schierbaum.

One of the victims, an 18-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, the Atlanta Police Department announced during a press conference.

Police are searching for three men and a woman believed to have initiated the gunfire after approaching a group assembled around a streetcar stopped on Edgewood Ave., Schierbaum said.

The incident was just one of 12 being investigated this weekend, with 29 people injured and two dead in their wake, said Schierbaum. “This department will not rest until we bring those who are responsible to justice,” he noted.

This year, Atlanta has seen 57 criminal homicides, per USA Today, citing Schierbaum. Last year, around the same time, the city had seen 76 killings.

“We haven’t had a weekend like this in a long time,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said, per the outlet. “Guns are not the answer.”

Anyone with information about the Monday mass shooting or any other shootings that took place over the weekend is asked to call 404-577-TIPS (8477).
