Pharrell Williams is gearing up for the 2025 Met Gala, and as one of this year’s co-chairs, he’s teasing what fans can expect from the annual high-fashion event.

The “Happy” singer opened up about what can be expected when celebrities begin ascending the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5 and explained that it will be a celebration of all things Black culture and excellence.

“It’s going to be a very impactful, beautiful night where we celebrate the color Black,” the music producer said during his appearance on The Run-Through With Vogue podcast on April 29. “We celebrate the things that come from that color. We celebrate the mentality. We celebrate the plight. We celebrate the progress and the success. And we celebrate the potential.”

He continued, “We see it in all different forms, right? From authors to architects to artists to academics and to athletes, all A words. But, yeah, that’s what that night is all about. It’s like the best of the best, top of the top.”

This year’s Met Gala theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which takes inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Last year’s dress code was “Garden of Time,” which corresponded to the Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit and the theme for the gala.

Williams attended the Met Gala four times prior to landing his co-chair title — in 2011, 2017, 2018 and most recently in 2021, alongside wife Helen Lasichanh to celebrate the “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” exhibit at the Costume Institute.

For the 2021 gala, Williams and Lasichanh matched in cowboy-inspired ensembles designed by Chanel. The couple both wore glossy black leather cowboy shirts with white piping and matching slim-fit pants.

The married pair differentiated their look with accessories — the producer wore a metal bolo tie and sunglasses, while his wife accessorized with beaded necklaces and a round crossbody bag — but maintained consistency by wearing the same black leather steel-toe cowboy boots.

“My cup runneth over,” Williams told Keke Palmer — who hosted the red carpet livestream for Vogue that night — about his relationship with Chanel. “I learned so much from the house.”

“That’s what that night is going to be, the manifestation of using the platform to celebrate us and all of our enthusiasts,” Williams added. “That means people who are not necessarily Black, but just, like, enthusiasts of the Black culture and enthusiasts of the Black color and enthusiasts of everything that has something to do with Black and Brown.”

The 2025 Met Gala returns on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Singer  Teyana Taylor, television host La La Anthony and Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim will host Vogue‘s fifth annual livestream of The Met Gala Red Carpet, while Emma Chamberlain will serve as a special correspondent for the evening.

Vogue‘s livestream will be available on its digital platforms, as well as TikTok and YouTube, at 6 p.m. E.T. on May 5.
