Penn State Athletic Director Pat Kraft has articulated the deep-seated reasons behind the monumental decision to fire head football coach James Franklin, emphasizing that the move was far more than a reaction to a three-game losing streak and was driven by an uncompromising vision for national championships.

In a move that reverberated throughout college football, Penn State parted ways with long-tenured head coach James Franklin after a disappointing 3-3 start to the 2025 season. The decision, announced Sunday following a stunning loss to Northwestern, triggered a hefty $50 million buyout—the second-largest in college football history. On Monday, Athletic Director Pat Kraft addressed the media, shedding light on the “extremely difficult” but necessary choice, underscoring the university’s unwavering pursuit of excellence and national glory.

Beyond the Three-Game Skid: A Trajectory Under Scrutiny

While the immediate catalyst for Franklin’s dismissal was a disheartening three-game losing streak, Kraft firmly stated that the decision stemmed from a much broader evaluation of the program’s trajectory. “This is not a three-game thing,” Kraft explained, as reported by Yahoo Sports. “This is really diving into where we were as a program. What is the trajectory of this program? And you all know, I’m not shy to admit it: I’m here to win national championships.”

Penn State had entered the 2025 season ranked as the No. 2 team in the country, riding high after reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals last season. Despite a 3-0 start, the Nittany Lions stumbled spectacularly, falling to Oregon in a close home game, followed by unexpected losses to UCLA (which had already fired its coach) and a subpar Northwestern team. These defeats ultimately sealed Franklin’s fate.

Kraft emphasized the rigorous process behind such a significant decision, noting he felt there was “no other course” after reviewing everything on Saturday, but consciously slept on the decision to ensure clarity. He described the period as an “extremely difficult 48 hours,” reinforcing the gravity of dismissing a coach who had led the program for over a decade, as documented by USA Today Network.

Franklin’s Penn State Legacy: Wins, Growth, and Persistent Hurdles

Franklin’s tenure, spanning over a decade, saw significant achievements for the Nittany Lions. He compiled a commendable 104-45 record and led the team to six double-digit win seasons, including their first-ever College Football Playoff berth. He was widely credited for “taking us out of a dark era,” as noted by interim coach Terry Smith. Franklin’s ability to consistently recruit top talent and maintain program stability was undeniable.

However, a persistent narrative haunted his time in Happy Valley: the inability to consistently beat top-tier opponents. Franklin’s record against ranked opponents stood at 15-29, and a concerning 4-21 against top-10 teams. While the 2024 CFP appearance offered a glimpse of breaking through this ceiling, the early season collapse in 2025 indicated that the program, in Kraft’s assessment, was not trending towards consistent championship contention.

The Blueprint for the Next Head Coach: Excellence in the Modern Era

Kraft outlined a clear and ambitious vision for Franklin’s replacement, emphasizing the need for a leader who can thrive in the rapidly evolving landscape of college football. The ideal candidate, according to Kraft, must:

  • Maximize Elite-Level Resources: Penn State has invested heavily in its football program, and Kraft expects the next coach to leverage these resources for optimal results.
  • Attack the Transfer Portal: Success in the modern era demands a strategic and aggressive approach to the transfer portal for immediate roster upgrades.
  • Develop Talent at the Highest Level: Beyond recruiting, the ability to cultivate and elevate players is paramount.
  • Retain Talent in the NIL Era: Navigating Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals to keep star players is a critical component of program building.
  • Embody Penn State Values: The coach must represent integrity, accountability, toughness, humility, and an elite motivational style, living out the “We Are Penn State” motto.
  • Honor Tradition While Evolving: A balance between respecting the program’s rich history and adapting to new challenges.

“This person has to fit Penn State. They need to represent the toughness, the blue-collar work ethic and the class that defines this institution,” Kraft stated, asserting the search for an “elite” replacement who understands the “weight of ‘we are’ and leads us forward with a vision of championships.” The goal, he reiterated, is to become “the best program in the country.”

Interim Leadership and a Call for Unity

In the immediate aftermath, associate head coach Terry Smith was promoted to interim coach for the remainder of the season. Kraft confirmed that Smith would “absolutely” be considered for the full-time role, providing an internal candidate with an opportunity to prove his leadership. Smith, a Penn State alumnus who played under Joe Paterno, expressed his deep connection to the program, stating, “I love this place. I bleed blue and white.” He acknowledged the challenge ahead, particularly with quarterback Drew Allar out with a season-ending injury, necessitating Ethan Grunkemeyer stepping up.

Smith also shared details of an emotional team meeting where Franklin addressed the players directly, highlighting the strong bonds he had forged: “Those kids love him. He went into each and every one of their homes and brought them here,” Smith recounted. Kraft, recognizing the emotional toll on the players and the fan base, urged supporters to direct any frustration towards him and Franklin, but to “rally around the players,” emphasizing “that’s who Penn State is. That’s who we are.”

The Road Ahead: Unyielding Expectations

The Penn State football program, described by Kraft as the “backbone” of the athletic department, operates under immense pressure. With significant investments made and a passionate fan base yearning for ultimate success, the expectations for the next head coach will be stratospheric. The decision to absorb a nearly $50 million buyout underscores the university’s profound commitment to achieving a national championship. The coming weeks and months will be a crucial period as Pat Kraft leads a national search to find the leader who can finally guide the Nittany Lions to the pinnacle of college football, transforming “We Are” into “We Are Champions.”
