Pauletta Washington is sharing her reaction to husband Denzel Washington’s Othello revival being ignored by the Tony Awards.
In conversation with a group of reporters on Wednesday, May 7, the Reasonable Doubt star, 74, spoke out after PEOPLE asked about her reaction to the Othello snub. The popular play stars her husband Denzel Washington alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.
“Now see, that’s not something you want to ask me,” she says with a laugh. “I can’t say that I was surprised that they didn’t.”
“In my family we’ve been through this a lot of times. A lot of times. And I think I can speak honestly and truthfully and artistically that it was denied, you know, so you wonder why,” Pauletta adds. “But we don’t have to wonder why: It’s narrow-minded people that are in charge of making decisions and judgments.”

Directed by Kenny Leon, the revival of the famed William Shakespeare tragedy stars Denzel as Othello and Gyllenhaal as Iago. The production recently broke box office records, bringing in a whopping $2.8 million in one week, the highest weekly gross for a Broadway play in history.
However, the production has drawn criticism for skyrocketing ticket prices due to its popularity. Some tickets have been priced as high as $900 on the show’s website.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Denzel, 70, said tickets are selling “as low as $50. People don’t talk about that.”
His wife Pauletta says that very ire is a contributing factor to the shut out. “That’s the bottom line,” she told another journalist after citing the play’s monstrous monetary success. “And that’s a part of it. And you know that.”
Kandi Burruss, a co-producer of the revival alongside husband Todd Tucker, expressed her disappointment over the Tony Awards snub in an Instagram post May 1.

“Of course I’m disappointed, but I’m still beyond proud to be part of this phenomenal production. Every time I watch our cast, I’m blown away and inspired,” she said.
Pauletta echoed a similar sentiment as her former Reasonable Doubt costar, saying “I’ve gone to many, many performances, as you can imagine, and everybody leaves it — without knowing anything about Shakespeare — knowing what the story is.”

“In our family, we’re the toughest critics for each other because we are on display, so we know we have to be on the mark at all times. So the work is put in.”
The first two seasons of Reasonable Doubt are available to stream on Hulu. The show returns for a third season later this year.
