Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are on the case one last time in another installment of The Conjuring franchise.

The Conjuring: Last Rites brings the actors back as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. This film — billed as Wilson and Farmiga’s final time in the roles — follows the true story of the Smurl family haunting in Pennsylvania in the ’80s. Last Rites comes after the 2013 original and 2016’s The Conjuring 2, which were directed by James Wan, and 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, directed by Chaves.

Also inspired by the Warrens’ supernatural cases are 2014’s Annabelle, its 2017 prequel and 2019 sequel, plus 2018’s The Nun and 2023’s The Nun II. (Ed Warren died in 2006 at the age of 79, while Lorraine died in 2019 at the age of 92. The famous investigators are survived by their daughter, Judy Spera.)

In February 2024, production company New Line announced Ben Hardy and Mia Tomlinson were added to the cast of Last Rites. It’s produced by Wan and Peter Safran with a screenplay from David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing.

Upon wrapping filming in November 2024, Farmiga, 51, honored her onscreen husband, calling them “a match made in heaven” and a “hell of an era” in an Instagram post showing the two in marriage garb.

“Roundabout 5000 days ago, this guy and I signed a WB contract and said ‘I do’ to embodying Ed and Lorraine Warren,” she wrote. “Here’s to 12 years. I cherish you, @thereelpatrickwilson @theconjuring.”

“Our fake marriage has lasted longer than many real ones,” wrote Wilson, 51, of Farmiga in an Instagram post of his own marking the end of filming. “As the sun sets on the Conjuring franchise… I am overwhelmed. There aren’t enough thanks to go around for the thousands of people who’ve contributed to the making of these films… and the millions who’ve watched them.”

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Farmiga said audiences are “going to witness a moment in the Warrens’ lives — and a pretty profound moment” — in the new film. “It’s a moment that makes time stand still,” she added. “This one’s different than the others. The other three were about hauntings, and this one is about reckoning, in a way.”

The Conjuring: Last Rites is in theaters Sept. 5.
