  • Rachel and Marco Vargas welcomed a super rare set of identical quadruplets on Jan. 24

  • The four girls — Sofía, Philomena, Veronica and Isabel Campos — spent nine weeks in the NICU following their premature birth and were discharged from the hospital on April 2

  • In a new update, Rachel and Marco, who are also parents to two toddlers — said their life is “chaos” at the moment — but they are still keen to expand their family in the future

Rachel and Marco Vargas admit their life has been complete “chaos” since bringing their baby quadruplets home from the hospital — but they’re still game to expand their family in the future.

The Rhode Island couple welcomed a super rare set of identical quadruplets at around 30 weeks’ gestation at Banner – University Medical Center in Phoenix on Jan. 24. After nine weeks in the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit), the four girls — named Sofía, Philomena, Veronica and Isabel Campos — were discharged on April 2. They finally got to go home and settle in with their elder siblings, brother Walter, 3, and sister Stella, 1.

Speaking with NBC 10 News, Marco summed up the current state of affairs in the family’s home as “busy.”

“There’s plenty of chaos,” wife Rachel added.

She said the quadruplets, now nearly 4 months old, are “still in the phase where they’re sleeping most of the time.”

The parents are already taking note of the little quirks that set each girl apart from her identical siblings. “Sophia is the plumpest, and she has a really, really bushy head of hair, so there’s no mistaking her,” Marco told the outlet.

“Isabel has a little dot there on the cleft,” he said, noting that Veronica has a V-shaped birthmark on her forehead.

As for Philomena, she is easily identified by the fact that she doesn’t have any distinguishing marks.

The tired parents joked that, these days, date nights involve “riding in the car when they’re all asleep and getting a cup of coffee and driving around.”

Despite being outnumbered — and then some — with six kids, Rachel and Marco said they are still keen to grow their family in the future.

“We’d have more for sure. Our son is the only boy right now, so he’s one boy with five sisters, so if I can give him a brother, I’d certainly like to do it,” Rachel told NBC 10 News.

“We figure once they get older, they’re going to keep each other occupied, they’ll form a little society,” Marco added.

After the quadruplets’ birth, the couple said in a news release from the hospital that they were “excited to start this new chapter” in their lives as a family of eight.

“While it hasn’t been an easy journey, we can’t wait to share the milestones that will come with raising our beautiful girls,” they added.

According to their specialist at Banner, Dr. John Elliott, Rachel’s “1-in-40 million” high-risk pregnancy came with serious, life-threatening complications. Two of the babies shared the same amniotic sac and had the umbilical cord inserted into the fetal membranes instead of the placenta, which “can result in a 30-40% risk of death to the fetuses,” per the release.

In addition, two of the babies were diagnosed with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), which is uneven blood flow between identical twins sharing a single placenta. “With all the complications involved in Rachel’s pregnancy, we were very candid about the risks and potential outcomes, but we also underscored the importance of having a positive outlook,” Elliott said, per the release.

Rachel delivered the babies via C-section, and they all weighed in at around 3 lbs. She opened up about the emotional birth during an appearance on Good Morning America, recalling, “I felt a huge sense of relief because I felt like they had made it, they were going to be okay.”

Marco told the outlet: “It was glorious seeing these girls being triumphantly pulled out.”
