Today—Tuesday, July 22—the music world mourns the loss of Ozzy Osbourne. The heavy metal rocker died at the age of 76 after battling several health issues.
But eerily, 22 years before his passing, he was once left in a coma for over a week after a horrendous ATV accident, a situation that caused him needing to be brought “back to life”—more than once.
In Dec. 2003, Osbourne was involved in the mishap while riding his four-wheel vehicle at his English estate. As a result, he suffered fractures in eight ribs, a vertebra and his left collarbone, according to Rolling Stone.
Afterward, the rock star told Britain’s Sunday Mirror (in a now-archived exclusive interview) that he “died” twice and was in a coma for eight days. “(My bodyguard) had to bring me back to life twice,” he told the publication at the time, per Today.com. Doctors inserted metal rods into the Black Sabbath frontman’s body following the harrowing ordeal.
Osbourne was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2003, though it wasn’t until more recent years he began to open up about it. He additionally required multiple spinal surgeries as a result of a fall in 2019 that affected his metal rods, and dealt with alcohol and drug abuse for years.
As Parade reported, the Godfather of Heavy Metal’s death was confirmed by his family, who issued a statement regarding the major loss. “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” it read. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”
