A nationwide butter recall just got a little more serious. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upped the classification of a recent recall of around 64,800 pounds of butter to Class II, the second-highest level. Bunge North America voluntarily initiated the recall of its European Style Butter Blend on July 14 due to a failure to declare on the label that the products contain milk.
Milk is considered one of the major food allergens by the FDA, and products containing it must be labeled accordingly.
Although no adverse reactions to the recalled butter have been reported yet, bumping it up to a Class II recall means consumption “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” and that there’s a remote possibility of more serious health consequences.
Which products have been recalled?
The specific product that has been recalled is Bunge’s European Style Butter Blend, sold in one-pound increments. The company notes they were packed in white paperboard cases with 36 blocks to a case. 1800 cases were distributed via 12 distribution centers in the U.S. and one in the Dominican Republic.

Those allergic to milk should not consume the recalled butter. If you have the product on hand but nobody in your household has an allergy or intolerance to milk, then you should be in the clear. The current recall only relates to the lack of appropriate labeling for milk.
