This award season, culturally dominating films like Wicked and Emilia Pérez—and even critical favorites like Anora and The Brutalist—have emerged as frontrunners in the conversation, but a powerful Brazilian film has proven to be a worthy competitor. I’m Still Here, directed by Walter Salles, tells the true story of Eunice Paiva and her family after her husband, politician Rubens Paiva, is arrested and mysteriously disappears amid Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s. Based on her son Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s memoir, the biopic follows Eunice’s unshakeable search for her husband and the decisions she makes to protect her children as danger looms.
Fernanda Torres delivers a remarkable lead performance as Eunice, conveying both strength and vulnerability in the demanding role. It’s no wonder then that she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress this year, especially after she won the Golden Globe for lead drama actress in early January. She takes home Brazil’s first Oscar acting nod since 1999, which was held by her own mother, Fernanda Montenegro, according to Variety.
“It’s like a fairy tale,” Torres told ELLE.com of her nomination. “In Brazil, there is this sense that my mother and I are a continuation of something; two talents that endure in time. So it’s pretty magical.”
I’m Still Here won the Oscar for International Feature Film, and earned a Best Picture nomination. Following its premiere in Brazil, the film is now playing in the U.S. Here’s how to watch.
