It’s easy to see that Cate Blanchett has long since made a name for herself as one of the most talented actors of her generation.
Making her official acting debut in 1990, Blanchett has gone on to appear in a variety of well-known movies and theatrical productions over the last three decades, including such noteworthy films as Carol, Thor: Ragnarok, The Aviator and Blue Jasmine, the latter two of which earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively.
With how deeply tied Blanchett has been to the film industry, her unexpected cameo at the end of Netflix’s Squid Game fittingly took viewers by surprise, leading to all kinds of speculation about her place in the series and how exactly her cameo came about in the first place.
In a recent interview with Variety, the 56-year-old Lord of the Rings actress discussed her surprise appearance in the hit Netflix series, which saw the critically acclaimed actress portray an American recruiter for the titular competition, playing a homeless man at a game of ddjakji.
“Because it’s such a cult series and they were shooting in L.A. of all places, everyone was on a need-to-know basis,” Blanchett told the publication. “I got a couple of storyboards. I had to [learn to] play the game very quickly. I had to practice and practice. I knew there were four or five setups that they were going to do, and I knew what they needed from every shot, and then I was given the sides. But it was one of the more mysterious jobs.”
With speculation continuing to run rampant regarding a potential Squid Game spinoff series, Blanchett also voiced her interest in a full-fledged role in a Netflix-backed continuation of the show.
“I am wildly open to anything,” said Blanchett. “And in a world that is so beautifully, magically created like that, for sure. They’re amazing world-builders, and that series has been eaten alive. I don’t think there’s a corner of the globe that it hasn’t touched in some way.”
