Opinion – ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ funding will train all levels of law enforcement amid grave threats

With America is facing rising threats, one truth remains clear: Our national security depends on more than just the right policies. It depends on the brave men and women of law enforcement who stand between danger and the American people. Ensuring law enforcement officers are trained, prepared and supported isn’t optional –– it’s essential.

As a former police officer and Army veteran, I know firsthand how critical it is for officers to be properly trained and prepared. Whether it’s responding to violent crime in our communities, securing the border, or preventing terrorist activity here in the homeland, split-second decisions are shaped by the quality of their training. These officers are often the first to detect and disrupt sleeper cells and terrorism threats that most Americans never see, which makes their preparation all the more vital.

That is why I am proud to support the $750 million investment in the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center included in Republicans’ recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Before I ran for office, I walked the thin blue line. I worked patrol and confronted dangerous situations head on, just like thousands of law enforcement officers in this country do every time they walk out the front door in the morning. I’ve experienced what it’s like to run into an unknown situation and rely on your training to get you and your buddies home safely that night.

I know how much that training matters — not just in the moment but in building the mindset, judgment and resilience that define a good officer. The men and women in law enforcement deserve access to the highest level of preparation we can provide and that is exactly what the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center delivers.

It isn’t just a training facility –– it’s where America’s law enforcement backbone is built. From Border Patrol to Immigration and Customs and Enforcement (ICE) to the Secret Service, this is where our men and women in uniform are trained to meet real-world threats. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center was established in 1970, when the country realized there was a need for standardized high-quality training for federal law enforcers and agents.

With campuses in Georgia, New Mexico, South Carolina and Maryland, the center trains more than 125 federal agencies and provides specialized training for state, local and tribal law enforcement partners. That kind of collaboration between federal and local officers is exactly what we need more of.

Republicans’ investment includes $285 million to expand the center’s ability to recruit and train the personnel our country needs, especially in high-demand areas like the U.S. Border Patrol and ICE.

Under Republican leadership in Congress and with President Trump at the helm, we’ve begun to reverse the chaos at the southern border. Illegal crossings have dropped dramatically, but the mission isn’t over. To continue correcting course and keep America safe, we need a strong pipeline of well- trained agents ready to secure the borders of our country, state and communities. Local officers are our first line of defense and deserve the best training and tools to effectively do the job.

Through the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” another $465 million will go toward upgrading the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center’s aging infrastructure. These campuses are long overdue for modernization. Without this investment we risk diminishing both training capacity and the safety of instructors and recruits.

As a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, I’ve prioritized ensuring that our federal law enforcement officers are equipped and empowered to confront today’s threats. This funding isn’t about optics or headlines. This is about national security, our readiness and making sure that the people who protect us have what they need to succeed.

As a former cop and veteran, I know exactly how much preparation matters. Training saves lives, not just for those in uniform, but for those we swore an oath to protect. I’ve worked side by side with officers and soldiers who were prepared because they had the right foundation, and by funding the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, we can ensure this continues.

While some in Washington want to restrict officers’ ability to enforce the law and maintain public safety, Republicans are backing the blue. Congress has a duty to support the men and women who protect us, not just in words, but in action. That begins with ensuring they are well trained, equipped and prepared.

I’ll continue to fight for investments like this, because when we strengthen law enforcement, we strengthen America.
