Red, white, and blue doesn’t always have to be a patriotic color palette, and Katie Holmes knows that if you mix in the right tones and patterns, it won’t seem like you just left a Fourth of July barbecue. Primary colors are hot right now, anyway.
Case in point: Holmes was spotted on the streets of New York City over the weekend, where she once again displayed her knack for layering, with a slip dress stacked over a tank top (one of her go-to styling tricks).
Her slip was the Rachel Comey Nalin dress—a breezy, ivory midi with a contrasting sky-blue bodice that looked like a piece of scrap paper collaged onto the design.
The bodice was embroidered with black and white beads threaded in the shape of flowers, and the sweetheart neckline was outlined with thin, jagged red thread that also decorated the hem of the transparent skirt. Finally, the spaghetti-strap dress featured slits up the sides for a real breezy effect.

While the dress would have been a statement on its own, never doubt that Holmes will take things up a notch. Underneath the midi, she added even more color with a royal-blue tank top that featured subtle lavender piping—a combo that could have been overwhelming, but totally worked.
As for accessories, the actor matched the scarlet trim of the Rachel Comey design by slipping into one of her trusted shoes of the summer: the velveteen Mary Jane flats from Le Monde Beryl. She also slung a floral-printed Ulla Johnson tote over her shoulder, topping things off the eye-popping fit with a pair of amber oversize shades.
Over the past few weeks, Holmes has been giving us a mix of street style sightings and costumed moments on set, as she films a new trilogy of romance movies, called Happy Hours, with her former Dawson’s Creek costar, Joshua Jackson. Not only will she star alongside Jackson, but Holmes will also serve as the director and screenwriter on the films. If only she had snagged the costume designer role too.
