One ’70s Icon Remembers Another: ‘Hard to Lose Good Ones’ originally appeared on Parade.
M*A*S*H Emmy winner Loretta Swit passed away on May 30 at the age of 87. The actress died of natural causes in her New York City home, and she appeared to be living life to the fullest even at 87. She was active on Instagram, shouting out her M*A*S*H co-stars every chance she got and writing posts related to her known animal activism — Swit was a huge animal lover.
It also turns out that she was close friends with fellow ’70s and ’80s icon Morgan Fairchild. The Flamingo Road Golden Globe winner took to Instagram on June 4 to honor her late friend, with whom she had just spoken before Swit’s untimely death.

“Remembering my friend of 50 years, Loretta Swit, here w/Tom Berenger. We spoke 2 days before she died. So glad we had a LOOONG catchup 10 days before, & she regaled me with stories of her fights to get Hot Lips turned into Margaret, cartoon to real woman. Some stories I never heard at the time. We talked about when we met & she reminded me I was her first houseguest in her new home in ‘75, & our crazy time painting her NY apartment. Hard to lose good ones 💔,” wrote Fairchild.
In the comments, fans were quick to offer Fairchild their condolences for the loss of her longtime friend.

“So sorry, Morgan – by all accounts, she was an amazing person. Few and far between…🙏🏼,” wrote one fan.
Another added, “I am so sorry for the loss of your dear friend. I loved her most for her animal activism.”
“Thank you for sharing these memories. There are so many stories that need to be shared,” wrote a third fan.
Indeed, Swit was known for her animal activism. After she died, PETA released a statement honoring the late actress that reads, “While Loretta Swit may have been known to most as Major Margaret Houlihan, she was known to PETA as a major champion for all animals. A longtime vegan, she reminded everyone that “animals are my friends, not my food,” and at every turn, she encouraged people to spay, neuter, and adopt animals in need. The world has lost a kind soul and animals a true friend, and PETA will always treasure her legacy of compassion.”
