Could Timothée Chalamet be the next A-list actor lighting up Broadway?

In a Broadway season full of star power, Jamie Lloyd — who directed Nicole Scherzinger in her Tony Award-nominated Broadway debut in Sunset Boulevard — is already thinking about what’s next.

Speaking exclusively with Parade at Night at the Pier, Family Equality’s signature fundraising gala, on Monday, May 12 — which raised $1.5 million for the organization — the Tony-nominated director revealed another A-lister he’d like to collaborate with.

“I would love to work with Timothée Chalamet,” he told Parade. “I think seeing him on stage in a play, maybe a classic Shakespeare would be really, really cool. I think his Hamlet would be an amazing event. So if you’re listening, Timmy, come on. Let’s let’s try and make it happen! I think it’d be cool.”

Lloyd, who is Tony-nominated for his unique take on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, also shared his take on modernizing a classic.

“I guess that’s the great thing about all art, isn’t it? That it’s all so subjective,” he reflected. “What we aspire to do is allow people to bring themselves to the productions, as in we kind of encourage audiences to be kind of almost co-authors in the experience, bring their imagination.”

While many have commented on how Lloyd’s Sunset Boulevard feels particularly stripped down as compared to productions in the past, “There’s a lot of information on the stage,” Lloyd explained. “People who talk about the minimalism — they kind of use that to describe the work — [I] actually feel like there’s a lot of information on stage, it’s just not literal. I guess it demands a lot from audiences, but if they’re willing to go on the journey, then hopefully it’s a really exciting experience for them.”

He added, “It may not be for everyone, but that’s cool. I don’t like every piece of art that I see, every movie that I see — I’m sure you’re the same — and I think that’s what keeps everything exciting. And there’s clearly something for everyone in this Broadway season, so I’m just hyped to be a part of it.”

Sunset Boulevard currently plays on Broadway through July 13 at the St. James Theatre.
