Nicole Kidman is having a solo outing at the Met Gala — but she did bring a bold new beauty transformation with her.
The actress, 57, attended the 2025 Met Gala on May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, sporting a chic, super short hairstyle and a color switch-up.
She dramatically transformed her hair into a new cropped style, which appeared to be bob length but slicked down for a polished complement to her Balenciaga dress. She also is rocking a two-tone hair color. (You know you’re a red carpet vet when you use the Met Gala to drop a big hair move.)
Her hairstylist Adir Abergel posted an Instagram explaining the inspiration behind the look, pegging it to the night’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
“The inspiration was a tailored short cut that brought out the essence of Dandyism on Nicole Kidman,” he wrote. “I wanted to celebrate this years theme by honoring the Dandies and their individuality, elegance, and confidence—where every detail is tailored to that unique person.”
As for the outfit, Kidman wore a black vintage-inspired Balenciaga gown. Per Vogue, Balenciaga designer Demna used a gown featured in a 1952 issue of Harper’s Bazaar London as inspiration. At the waist and hips, the look featured silk satin bow belts.
“Balenciaga is a house that has developed and evolved in such a specific way over the years,” Kidman told Vogue “When Demna sent me this sketch, I was inspired by the way he was able to take such a beautiful piece from the house’s past and modernize it in a way that felt so uniquely me.”
She added: “From the hips, to the bows around the waist, to the corset, Demna and his team have this dress tailored to perfection. The fabric and the tulle is divine.”
On the carpet, she shared more insight into her inspiration with Vogue’s La La Anthony: “This kind of was inspired in support of all of those gorgeous, gorgeous dandies and the women that then honored them and supported them or protected them. So I’m happy to be here as one of them.”

In October, Vogue announced Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour as co-chairs of the 2025 Met Gala, as well as LeBron James as honorary chair. The event, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is a fundraiser for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton shared that the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”
The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.
The Met Gala’s dress code this year is “Tailored for You.” It is a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. The host committee this year includes Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, Regina King, Spike Lee, Angel Reese, Doechii and Usher.

Kidman previously attended the Met Gala in 2024 with her husband, Keith Urban, where Kidman dazzled in a custom Balenciaga reinterpretation of a 1950s Cristóbal Balenciaga Couture evening gown. Her dress featured a white double silk satin bustier with tail worn over a long-flared skirt with hand-frayed organza and feather-like embroidery. She added drama to the look with white opera gloves.
Kidman wore her long blonde hair in an effortless straight style. She also donned a classic makeup look with dark lashes, pink blush and a glossy lip.
Urban, 57, was also decked out in Balenciaga at the fashion event. He wore a black single-breasted jacket with straight-leg pants.
The singer accessorized with a bow tie and cummerbund in black satin and black shoes.
Kidman exclusively spoke to PEOPLE shortly before the 2024 Met Gala and said she still gets nervous before the major event. However, she noted that it is easier with her husband by her side.
“I have my man with me,” Kidman said, reaching for Urban, who was standing nearby.

The celebrity couple also made an appearance at the 2023 Met Gala, which saw Kidman in the same pink tulle gown she wore in a 2004 Chanel No. 5 ad directed by Baz Luhrmann. Much like the year before, her husband kept it simple in a black-and-white tuxedo.

More recently, Kidman rocked a boss look at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards in February. There, the actress wore a Saint Laurent suit consisting of an oversize tan wool jacket and matching high-waisted wide-leg wool pants. She layered the stylish jacket over a striped shirt and a silk tie.
Kidman finished the look with the house’s Faye slingback pumps. As for her glam, she wore her hair down in soft wavy curls and kept her glam light.
