In 1998, Practical Magic premiered, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The film quickly became a cult hit, and over the years, there have been rumors of a sequel (or a prequel) in the works. Now, those rumors are finally true.
Here’s everything we know about Practical Magic 2.
There’s plenty of source material to draw from.
The original film is based on Alice Hoffman’s novel of the same name, and in the years since, she has written three more novels set in the Practical Magic universe about the Owens family.
“It was a really long time and I never thought of doing it,” she said in a 2021 interview about writing a sequel. “But I got mail from readers saying that they wanted to have a sequel, that they wanted to know what happened to the characters. But, I felt like I wanted to know how these characters happened; I wanted to know their history. So I went back in time and I went to the ’60s in New York City in Greenwich Village—which is my favorite time and I wish we were there right now—and it was a total pleasure. I remember walking around Greenwich Village checking all the places where the book takes place and just how much fun that was to write about.”

In that same interview, Hoffman shared that the producer of Practical Magic also has the rights to books two and three, The Rules of Magic and Magic Lessons. “So I think they’re hoping that it will be a series—it seems like it’s so much material it would have to be a series rather than a film. I think it’d be interesting,” she said.
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will return for the Practical Magic sequel.
A few days after Practical Magic 2 was announced, Kidman confirmed she and Bullock will return. “Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that,” she told People. “There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.'” She added, “[We] found a way in.”
If the Practical Magic sequel decides to draw from The Rules of Magic, Kidman and Bullock’s characters Gillian and Sally don’t appear. As noted above, the second book is set in the 60s, following Susanna Owens and her three children, Franny, Jet, and Vincent. (Franny and Jet are the aunts in Practical Magic.)
The film will premiere in Fall 2026.
Warner Bros. announced it will hit theaters September 18, 2026. “Tooth of wolf and morning dew, something old and something new,” Kidman says in the first tease. “Let the spell begin to mix.”
