This week’s deeply moving episode of “Second Wind,” hosted by five-time Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones and bestselling author and entrepreneur Suzanne Evans, features one of the most vulnerable interviews to date as guest Nick Viall opened up about the heartbreak he and his wife Natalie Joy experienced following a miscarriage, and how it reshaped his understanding of grief, fatherhood, and connection.

The “Second Wind” podcast, which airs each Tuesday, is known for its uplifting and unfiltered conversations with high-profile guests including Cam Newton, Ashlyn Harris, Denise Richards, and Kayla Nicole.

This week, Nick Viall’s raw, emotional honesty added another layer of depth to the show’s growing legacy of resilience-centered storytelling.

In a powerful and graphic recounting, Viall, reality TV star, podcast host, and new father, revealed that his first exposure to miscarriage came as a child, when his mother experienced one in their home. That memory would resurface decades later as he supported Natalie through her own miscarriage.

“I remember when I was a young kid… my mom miscarried and she had the baby in her hands and things are very slippery and bloody, and it slipped in the toilet as she was flushing and she lost, so that was a very traumatic experience for my mom, and I’ll never forget it,” Viall shared.

During Natalie’s miscarriage, Viall said he relied on his instincts and the painful lessons he’d witnessed in his youth. After hearing Natalie scream from the bathroom, he rushed to comfort her, ultimately recovering their unborn child with his hands in an attempt to preserve the moment and offer some sense of peace.

“It was just a very horrible experience but Natalie was like, what do we do? There was this blood all over the toilet and finally I got her, calmed her down… I went in there with my hands and was able to recover our baby and save it, which was … I’m very grateful for that.”

He credited Natalie for her strength and compassion during that time, and spoke with appreciation about the way their families rallied around them. His father, he noted, gave him a touching compliment, saying he had handled the moment better than he had during his own.

As emotional as the story was, Viall also reflected on how that tragic experience allowed him, as a father, to connect with the child they lost, something he didn’t realize he had needed until much later.

“As a mother, you connect with your child… as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, your body’s changing, it is a tangible thing. For fathers, it’s a little different… As a father losing a child through miscarriage, I hadn’t had a chance to connect with our child in that way, but that moment was a way, as sad as it was, to connect.”

Viall also shared the contrast between his initial detachment during Natalie’s pregnancy with their now-infant daughter River, and the profound connection he feels today.

“River’s been with us since those moments,” he said. “I think about the drawer I opened where the pregnancy test was all the time… and so as a father, that moment helped me connect. I think it allowed us to grieve more evenly, if that makes sense.”

The episode, while deeply emotional, is a testament to Second Wind’s mission: providing a space for guests to explore the complexities of life, loss, healing, and starting over. Viall’s willingness to revisit such a painful chapter added to an already powerful conversation that many parents, especially fathers, may find both heartbreaking and healing.

“They cut you off from all society, your support system, and they just kind of f-ck with your emotions for as long as you’re there,” he said. “There really is an emotional resiliency that you either develop or had to go far on that show.”
