Next Level Chef went back to the basics of early cooking with a challenge that necessitated cooking protein with the bone in. It’s no small feat with the time constraints, but is an essential skill that every great chef must master.

Last week’s results determine who is cooking where. Megan Keno and Austin Beckett had the top dishes last week, earning their way into the top-level kitchen, where they were mentored by Richard Blais. Beatrice Heirigs and Ryan Scanlon cooked their way into the middle level kitchen with Nyesha Arrington, which left Brandon Rogers and Bobby Hicks in the bottom level with Gordon Ramsay.

Last week, Megan, the final home cook in the competition, won the Time Token. She opted to keep the extra 10 seconds for herself rather than take 10 seconds away from one of her competitors.

“I’ve been thinking about this and it’s a competition, but today I’m going to cook for myself on my grab,” she said. “I was very close to using it on Beatrice just because she went after one of my former teammates in the last challenge. But I figured I’d give myself the advantage here.”

What was the first challenge tonight on Next Level Chef, and who won it?

The “Bad to the Bone” competition required each chef to cook their protein with the bone in. Then, the midway platform drop added an additional element to the competition, which was flambé.

The winning dishes were Brandon’s tomahawk steak and Bobby’s rack of pork ribs, both from the bottom-level kitchen. And of the two, Brandon was awarded the Time Token for next week’s cook.

“Moving on up to a kitchen in the sky,” Brandon joked, paraphrasing The Jeffersons’ theme song.

The two chefs headed to the elimination challenge were Ryan for his bone-in filet and Megan for her unevenly cooked venison rack. The bone-in element continued with the challenge being to cook a whole fish.

The chef who was eliminated was Ryan, whose seam bream just didn’t measure up.

Gordon told him, “I am gutted. You may not be our Next Level Chef, but at 22 years of age, you have this heart of gold that is destined for success, and I’d like to try and open the door for you to continue that journey. Here’s what I’m going to do: We’ve got some very exciting restaurants in Boston, and I’m going to put you in touch with our head of culinary. I’d love to get you in for a start, so you can continue this journey and literally work together to see what’s on the horizon.”

“The fact that Chef Ramsay did that shows that he does believe in me,” Ryan said. “It’s been the experience of a lifetime. Chef Ramsay has blessed me with another opportunity to make my life better for me and my family and I’m not going to let him down.”

Next Level Chef airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX. Streams next day on Hulu.
