Former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is leading Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani by double digits in the New York City mayoral race, according to a poll from Marist released Wednesday.

In the Democratic primary for New York City mayor, Cuomo is the first-choice candidate of 38% of likely Democratic voters, according to the survey. Meanwhile, Mamdani notched second place with 27%, up from 18% in May, according to the poll.

Moreover, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander and City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams each received 7% of the vote, according to the poll. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents notably detained Lander on Tuesday after he reportedly assaulted federal law enforcement officers.

New York City conducts its mayoral primary elections using ranked-choice voting.

While some recent surveys have shown Cuomo leading in the New York City mayoral race, one recent poll showed Mamdani leading the former New York governor. Still, some reports have indicated that Mamdani could face an uphill battle securing votes from black and Latino voters. In a piece published on Monday, The New York Times editorial board wrote that while they think Mamdani “offers the kind of fresh political style for which many people are hungry,” the Democratic socialist is “running on an agenda uniquely unsuited” to New York City’s “challenges.” The NYT editorial board also stated they believe Mamdani “too often ignores the unavoidable trade-offs of governance.”

Additionally, the editorial board claimed that Cuomo has “his own significant shortcomings.”

Still, Mamdani has notched endorsements from some leading left-wing figures, including Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has previously critiqued Cuomo as being part of a “gerontocracy” in national politics.

The Marist poll surveyed 1,350 likely Democratic primary voters was conducted June 9 to June 12 by the Marist Poll. Results for the entire sample of likely Democratic primary voters (n=1,350) are statistically significant within plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

The design effect for this survey is 2.64 which has been incorporated in the calculation of all reported margins of error.

Cuomo’s campaign and Mamdani’s campaign did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
