When first-time mother Nicole Humphrey gave birth to her baby girl in May 2025, she received an unexpected luxurious gift from the hospital following her delivery.

The NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell University Hospital gifted her a Chanel “goodie bag” stuffed with a selection of premium cosmetic and skincare products.

Although the 32-year-old was well aware of the hospital’s reputation for pampering its patients, she says receiving the gift firsthand was a memorable way to mark the start of motherhood.

“I was honestly so surprised – and even more so that they brought it in without me having to say a word,” Humphrey tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I wasn’t sure if it was something everyone got or just a random gesture, but it made me feel so special.”

In a viral unboxing video, the new mother revealed that inside the small black-and-white Chanel bag were two lash primers, a lipstick, and body oil.

According to a press release by the hospital, Chanel endowed a $1.5 million annual prize for NewYork‑Presbyterian/Weill Cornell in 2004 to recognize physicians and scientists for outstanding achievements in obstetrics and gynecology.

For over two decades, in tandem with the academic award, the hospital has been offering all mothers who give birth at the center a Chanel-sponsored brochure that includes “information on medical and infant care” and a gift of luxury.

Humphrey believes every new mom deserves such a thoughtful gift to help them feel seen and uplifted after the intensity of birth.

“Personally, I think postpartum care in the U.S. is seriously lacking. So many new parents have never even held a newborn before – it can feel overwhelming and intimidating,” she emphasizes.

“On top of that, most moms are sent home just two to three days after giving birth, while their bodies are still in major recovery mode and sleep is almost nonexistent.”

According to a recent Harris Poll, 65% of women feel that mothers become an afterthought once the baby arrives – a number that, while slightly improved from 71% in 2022, remains deeply concerning.

The findings highlight a growing desire among women for better postpartum care and more recognition of their needs during the recovery period.

Many mothers report feeling overlooked, unsupported, and emotionally depleted in the weeks following childbirth. This makes even small gestures, like a thoughtfully curated goodie bag, feel especially meaningful.

“After all the physical and emotional intensity of labor, receiving something so luxurious made me feel truly seen and celebrated,” Humphrey tells PEOPLE. “It was the perfect little moment of indulgence during such a transformative time.”
