Netflix Is Reviving This Iconic ’80s Cop Show With a Movie Reboot originally appeared on Parade.

Netflix is rebooting ’80s favorite T.J. Hooker, the hit cop show that featured William Shatner in one of his most memorable roles, but this time around it’s getting the feature-length film treatment.

Jarrad Paul and Andy Mogel, the writers behind 2008’s Yes, Man, have been tapped for the script, while Sophie Cassidy, Matt Crespy, Adrian Askarieh and Alex Westmore will produce, according to a report from Deadline published on Tuesday, August 5.

The original T.J. Hooker first premiered in 1982 and ran for five seasons before ending in 1986. Shatner starred as a streetwise cop who voluntarily chose to return to train up-and-coming rookie police officers after working as a detective for several years. Season 1 also featured Adrian Zmed as T.J.’s hot-headed partner, Vince Romano. Heather Locklear joined the cast as Officer Stacy Sheridan in season 2, and James Darren landed a recurring role before being bumped up to a main cast member for seasons 3-5.

While neither Shatner, Locklear or Zmed have made any official comments regarding Netflix’s reboot, it sounds like the Star Trek star will be happy with the show being adapted into a movie.

T.J. Hooker could have been a wonderful show. It was a terrific show. I loved doing it,” Shatner said during The Television Academy Foundation’s “The Interviews” in 2009. “I ran up and down the streets of Los Angeles for five years and had a great time, but because it’s television, it couldn’t fulfill the original premise.”

The Emmy-winning actor explained that T.J. Hooker was initially created to be about a cop who had been molded by his time on the police force before the Miranda rights became standard procedure. The series was meant to give viewers a look at the struggles of the main character as he was forced to adjust to the modern rules all while still wanting to take matters into his own hands.

While Shatner wanted to showcase that conflict more deeply, network television didn’t always allow for the grit he thought the premise deserved. With a T.J. Hooker movie on the horizon, he might finally be getting his wish.
